Overview

Xalacom 0.005% Eye Drop is a combination of latanoprost, a prostaglandin analogue, and timolol, a beta-blocker, used to lower elevated pressure inside the eye in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension who need more than one medicine for adequate control.

The two medicines lower eye pressure through complementary mechanisms: latanoprost increases the drainage of fluid out of the eye, while timolol reduces the amount of fluid the eye produces.

How it Works

Latanoprost increases the outflow of fluid inside the eye (aqueous humour) through an alternative drainage pathway. Timolol blocks beta receptors in the eye that are involved in fluid production, reducing the amount of fluid made. Together, these actions produce a greater reduction in eye pressure than either medicine alone.

Directions for Use

Wash your hands before use. Tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid, and instil one drop without letting the dropper tip touch the eye or any surface. Press gently on the inner corner of the eye for about a minute after application to reduce systemic absorption.

Dosage

The usual dose is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily, in the morning, or as directed by your doctor.

Shelf Life

Refer to the expiry date printed on the packaging.

Storage Instructions

Store unopened bottles in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. Once opened, the bottle may be kept at room temperature below 25°C for up to 4 weeks; discard after that period. Keep out of reach of children.

Quick Tips

  • Use this medicine every day as prescribed, even without noticeable symptoms, as glaucoma often has no early warning signs.
  • Press gently on the inner corner of your eye for about a minute after each drop to reduce the amount absorbed into your bloodstream.
  • Be aware that this medicine can gradually darken the iris colour, which is usually permanent – discuss any concerns with your doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Xalacom used for?

Xalacom combines latanoprost and timolol to lower elevated eye pressure in glaucoma and ocular hypertension when one medicine alone is not enough.

How does Xalacom work?

Latanoprost increases fluid drainage from the eye, while timolol reduces fluid production, together lowering eye pressure more than either alone.

Why should I press on the corner of my eye after using this medicine?

Pressing gently on the inner corner of the eye for about a minute reduces how much of the medicine is absorbed into your bloodstream, lowering the chance of systemic side effects.

Can I use this medicine if I have asthma?

This medicine contains timolol, a beta-blocker, and should generally be avoided in asthma or severe breathing conditions – discuss your respiratory history with your doctor.

Why might my eye colour change while using this medicine?

The latanoprost component can gradually and permanently darken the iris, particularly in people with mixed-coloured eyes – discuss any concerns with your doctor.

Do I need to use this medicine even if I don’t notice any symptoms?

Yes, glaucoma often has no early symptoms, but untreated high eye pressure can silently damage vision – continue using this medicine as prescribed.

How should I store this eye drop?

Store unopened bottles in the refrigerator; once opened, it can be kept at room temperature below 25°C for up to 4 weeks.
