Zarin 2% Cream

Zarin 2% Cream is a topical antifungal cream containing miconazole nitrate 2% w/w as its active ingredient. It is used to treat fungal skin infections such as ringworm (tinea corporis), athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and skin infections caused by Candida yeast. Zarin is available over the counter at DoctorOnCall for customers who have an itchy, red, or scaly rash typical of a fungal skin infection that has been recognised by a pharmacist, doctor, or from previous experience with the same condition.

The cream is applied directly to the affected skin, where it works locally at the site of infection. It is meant for external use on the skin only and should not be used in the eyes, mouth, or internally. Zarin is generally suitable for mild to moderate superficial fungal skin infections and works best alongside good hygiene habits such as keeping the affected area clean, dry, and well-ventilated.

Miconazole nitrate, the active ingredient in Zarin, belongs to the imidazole class of antifungal medicines. It acts by blocking an enzyme the fungus needs to produce ergosterol, a key building block of the fungal cell membrane. When ergosterol production is disrupted, the fungal cell membrane becomes unstable and leaky, which prevents the fungus from growing further and ultimately destroys the fungal cell. Miconazole is active against a wide range of dermatophyte fungi as well as Candida yeast.

Wash and dry the affected area thoroughly before applying. Apply a thin layer of Zarin 2% Cream over the infected skin and a small area of surrounding healthy skin, then rub it in gently. Use twice daily, morning and evening, unless a doctor or pharmacist recommends otherwise, and wash your hands after use (unless the hands are the area being treated). Continue treatment for the full recommended course even if the skin appears to have cleared earlier, to reduce the chance of the infection returning.

For most fungal skin infections, apply Zarin 2% Cream to the affected area twice a day for 2 to 4 weeks; for skin candidiasis, treatment is usually continued for around 2 to 3 weeks. It is advisable to keep using the cream for a few additional days after the skin looks clear, to reduce the risk of recurrence. If there is no improvement after 4 weeks of consistent use, stop and consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Zarin 2% Cream remains valid for use up to the expiry date printed on the tube and outer carton when stored correctly and left unopened. Check the expiry date before each use, and discard the cream if it has expired or shows any change in colour, texture, or smell after opening.

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity. Keep the tube tightly closed after each use and avoid storing it in the bathroom or near a sink. Do not freeze. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

• Topical miconazole is absorbed into the bloodstream in only very small amounts, so significant drug interactions are uncommon with normal use over small skin areas
• Avoid applying other topical creams, ointments, or cosmetics to the same area at the same time unless advised by a pharmacist
• If used over large areas or for extended periods, there is a theoretical risk of interaction with oral blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin — inform your pharmacist if you take these
• No significant food interactions are expected with topical use

• Clean and dry the affected area thoroughly before each application
• Apply consistently twice daily for the full recommended course, even after symptoms improve
• Wear loose, breathable clothing over the treated area to help the skin stay dry
• Avoid sharing towels, clothing, or footwear while the infection is active
• Wash hands before and after applying, unless treating the hands themselves
• Consult a doctor or pharmacist if the rash worsens, spreads, or fails to improve after 4 weeks

Fungal skin infections are common in Malaysia’s warm, humid climate, particularly in skin folds, between the toes, and areas that stay damp from sweating. Maintaining good hygiene, keeping skin dry, and choosing breathable fabrics can help prevent recurrence alongside treatment with Zarin 2% Cream. If the infection affects the scalp or nails, covers a large area of the body, or does not respond to a full course of treatment, further evaluation by a doctor may be needed, as oral antifungal therapy could be required.
