Overview

Zyloric 100mg Tablet contains allopurinol 100mg, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor used to reduce high uric acid levels in the blood and to prevent recurrent attacks of gout, as well as to manage certain conditions involving excess uric acid such as recurrent kidney stones. It is a long-term preventive treatment rather than a medicine for treating a sudden gout attack.

Allopurinol works by blocking the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which the body normally uses to convert purines into uric acid. By reducing uric acid production, it lowers blood uric acid levels over time, which helps prevent new urate crystals from forming in joints and reduces the frequency of gout flares.

How it Works

Allopurinol and its active metabolite oxypurinol inhibit xanthine oxidase, the enzyme responsible for converting hypoxanthine to xanthine and then to uric acid. This lowers the amount of uric acid produced by the body, gradually reducing blood urate levels and, over months, shrinking existing urate deposits.

Directions for Use

Take Zyloric 100mg Tablet after food to reduce stomach upset, with a full glass of water, and drink plenty of fluids throughout the day to help prevent kidney stone formation. Continue taking this medicine regularly even during a gout flare, unless your doctor tells you otherwise, as stopping and restarting can make attacks more frequent.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Zyloric 100mg Tablet is a low dose once daily, which your doctor will gradually increase every few weeks based on regular blood uric acid measurements, until your target level is reached; the maintenance dose varies between individuals depending on response and kidney function.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Storage Instructions

Side Effects

  • Skin rash or itching
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Drowsiness or dizziness
  • Headache
  • Mild joint pain
  • Change in taste

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to allopurinol or any ingredient in this product
  • Starting allopurinol for the first time during an acute gout attack (start only once the attack has settled, unless already established on treatment)

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Azathioprine and mercaptopurine: allopurinol significantly increases their blood levels, so a substantial dose reduction of these medicines is usually required to avoid serious toxicity
  • Ampicillin or amoxicillin: combined use increases the risk of skin rash
  • Warfarin: allopurinol can enhance its blood-thinning effect, requiring closer monitoring
  • Thiazide diuretics may increase the risk of hypersensitivity reactions when combined with allopurinol, particularly in kidney impairment

Quick Tips

  • Drink plenty of water each day while taking this medicine to help prevent kidney stones
  • Continue taking allopurinol regularly even if you have a gout flare-up, unless your doctor advises otherwise
  • Limit alcohol and purine-rich foods (organ meats, some seafood) as they can raise uric acid levels
  • Report any new skin rash immediately, as some allopurinol-related skin reactions can become serious if not caught early

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Zyloric 100mg Tablet used for?

Zyloric 100mg Tablet is used to lower high uric acid levels in the blood and prevent recurrent gout attacks over the long term. It is also sometimes used to prevent certain types of kidney stones associated with high uric acid.

Will this medicine stop a gout attack I am having right now?

No, allopurinol does not relieve an acute gout attack and can even temporarily make it worse when first started, as uric acid levels shift. Your doctor will usually treat an active flare with a different, faster-acting anti-inflammatory medicine while continuing allopurinol.

Why might my gout attacks become more frequent when I start this medicine?

As allopurinol lowers uric acid levels, existing urate crystals in the joints can be mobilised, sometimes triggering more frequent attacks in the first few months. Your doctor may prescribe a preventive anti-inflammatory medicine during this period, and attacks usually settle with continued treatment.

Can I stop taking allopurinol once my gout improves?

No, do not stop without consulting your doctor. Gout is a long-term condition related to persistently high uric acid, and stopping allopurinol usually causes uric acid levels, and the risk of attacks, to rise again.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Zyloric 100mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue as normal. Do not double the dose.
