Overview

Zyloric 300mg Tablet contains allopurinol 300mg, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor used to reduce high uric acid levels in the blood (hyperuricaemia), and to prevent recurrent gout attacks, uric acid kidney stones, and the sudden rise in uric acid that can occur during chemotherapy for certain cancers (tumour lysis syndrome).

Allopurinol works by blocking the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which the body normally uses to produce uric acid from purine breakdown. By reducing uric acid production, allopurinol lowers blood uric acid levels over time, helping to prevent the crystal deposits that cause gout.

How it Works

Allopurinol and its active metabolite oxypurinol inhibit xanthine oxidase, the enzyme that converts hypoxanthine to xanthine and then to uric acid. This lowers the amount of uric acid produced in the body, gradually reducing serum uric acid levels and preventing the formation of urate crystals in joints and the kidneys.

Directions for Use

Take Zyloric 300mg Tablet after food to reduce stomach upset, and drink plenty of fluids each day unless your doctor advises otherwise, as this helps prevent kidney stone formation. Continue taking it regularly even between gout attacks, as it works to prevent future attacks rather than to relieve pain during a current one.

Dosage

The dose of Zyloric 300mg Tablet is individualised based on your blood uric acid level and kidney function, and your doctor will typically start at a lower dose and adjust it gradually to reach your target uric acid level. Do not start this medicine during an acute gout attack, as starting it can temporarily worsen the flare – your doctor will advise the right time to begin.

Side Effects

  • Skin rash or itching
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Drowsiness or dizziness
  • Headache
  • Mild joint pain
  • Change in taste

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to allopurinol or any ingredient in this product
  • A previous severe skin reaction to allopurinol
  • Asymptomatic hyperuricaemia alone, without gout, kidney stones, or another specific indication, in most cases

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Azathioprine and mercaptopurine levels are markedly increased by allopurinol, requiring a substantial dose reduction of these medicines if combined
  • Ampicillin and amoxicillin combined with allopurinol increase the risk of skin rash
  • Warfarin’s blood-thinning effect may be enhanced, requiring closer INR monitoring
  • ACE inhibitors and thiazide diuretics may increase the risk of hypersensitivity reactions when combined with allopurinol

Quick Tips

  • Continue taking this medicine regularly even when you feel well, as it prevents future gout attacks rather than treating pain
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day unless your doctor advises otherwise
  • Stop the medicine and seek urgent medical attention if you develop a skin rash, especially with fever or mouth sores
  • Tell your doctor about all your other medicines, as several interact significantly with allopurinol

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Zyloric 300mg Tablet used for?

Zyloric 300mg Tablet is used to lower high uric acid levels in the blood and to prevent recurrent gout attacks and uric acid kidney stones. Your doctor will confirm the specific reason it has been prescribed for you.

Will this medicine relieve my current gout attack pain?

No, allopurinol does not relieve pain during an acute gout attack and can even temporarily worsen it if started during a flare. It works to prevent future attacks by lowering uric acid over time.

How long do I need to take this medicine?

Allopurinol is usually a long-term, often lifelong, treatment for chronic gout or hyperuricaemia. Do not stop it without consulting your doctor, even if your gout attacks have stopped.

What skin symptoms should I watch out for?

Seek medical attention immediately if you develop a widespread rash, blistering, peeling skin, fever, or mouth ulcers, as these can be signs of a rare but serious skin reaction.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Zyloric 300mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue as normal. Do not double the dose.
