Overview

Apo Terbinafine 250mg Tablet contains terbinafine 250mg, an antifungal medicine used to treat fungal infections of the skin, nails (onychomycosis), and scalp caused by susceptible dermatophyte fungi, taken orally for infections that do not respond adequately to topical treatment.

Terbinafine works by blocking an enzyme fungi need to build their cell membrane, causing a build-up of a toxic substance inside the fungal cell and a deficiency of a substance it needs to survive, which kills the fungus (a fungicidal, rather than just fungus-suppressing, action).

How it Works

Terbinafine inhibits squalene epoxidase, an enzyme in the fungal cell membrane synthesis pathway. This causes squalene to accumulate to toxic levels within the fungal cell while depleting ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane, ultimately killing the fungus.

Directions for Use

Take Apo Terbinafine 250mg Tablet once daily, at about the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Complete the full course as prescribed, even if your symptoms improve early, as stopping too soon can allow the infection to return.

Dosage

The usual dose of Apo Terbinafine 250mg Tablet is 250mg once daily, with treatment duration depending on the site and severity of infection – commonly 2-6 weeks for skin infections and up to 6-12 weeks or longer for nail infections. Your doctor will determine the appropriate course length for your infection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Apo Terbinafine 250mg Tablet used for?

Apo Terbinafine 250mg Tablet is used to treat fungal infections of the skin, scalp, and nails, particularly nail infections (onychomycosis) that need oral treatment to reach the infection under the nail.

Why does it take so long to see results, especially for nail infections?

Nails grow slowly, so even after the fungus is cleared, it takes several months for a healthy nail to fully grow out and replace the infected part. Full nail clearance can take up to a year for toenails.

Do I need blood tests while taking this medicine?

Your doctor may recommend liver function tests before and during a prolonged course, since terbinafine is processed by the liver and can, rarely, affect liver function.

Can I drink alcohol while taking this medicine?

It is best to limit alcohol during treatment, as both alcohol and terbinafine are processed by the liver, and combining them may increase the risk of liver-related side effects.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Apo Terbinafine 250mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
