Overview

Avadol 250mg/5mg Suspension is an oral suspension with Paracetamol 250mg per 5ml as its sole active ingredient, manufactured in Malaysia and supplied in a 90ml bottle. Paracetamol belongs to the non-opioid analgesic and antipyretic class of ingredients, a well-established category used across oral liquid, tablet, and other dosage forms for both adults and children. Avadol is available in orange and strawberry flavours, formulated as a pink or orange-coloured liquid suspension for oral use.

Avadol’s 250mg/5ml strength is double that of the more commonly seen 120mg/5ml paracetamol suspensions formulated for younger children, which means a smaller liquid volume delivers the same amount of paracetamol. This makes correct volume measurement especially important with this particular strength, since mL-for-mL it is not interchangeable with a 120mg/5ml product without recalculating the dose.

Avadol 250mg/5mg Suspension is sold in Malaysia as an OTC (Over-the-Counter) product, typically supplied with a dosing cup or spoon in the pack. As with any OTC product, check the packaging for the exact ingredient list, batch number, and expiry date, and consult a pharmacist if you are unsure whether this strength is suitable for the intended user.

Directions for Use

  • Shake the bottle well before each use.
  • Measure the dose accurately using the dosing cup or spoon provided with the pack — do not use a regular kitchen spoon.
  • Give by mouth, with or without food.
  • Check any other medicine the same person is taking to make sure it does not also contain paracetamol, to avoid giving a double dose of the same active ingredient.

Dosage

Paracetamol oral suspension of this type is generally dosed at around 10-15mg per kg of body weight per dose, repeated every 4-6 hours as needed, up to a maximum of 4 doses in 24 hours — but the exact mL amount for a given age or weight should always be taken from the dosing table printed on the pack insert, or confirmed with a doctor or pharmacist, rather than estimated. This is particularly important for Avadol’s 250mg/5ml strength, since it requires half the liquid volume of a 120mg/5ml product for the same milligram dose.

Do not give more than the maximum daily dose, and do not give doses closer together than 4 hours apart. Self-treatment with Avadol should not continue beyond 2-3 consecutive days without a doctor’s advice. If a dose is missed, give it as soon as remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Seek urgent medical attention if an overdose is suspected, even if the person seems well, as paracetamol overdose can cause delayed liver damage.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight, and out of reach of children. Discard any suspension remaining after the period stated on the bottle once opened, if a discard date is specified on the label.

Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Stomach upset
  • Rash or allergic skin reactions
  • Rarely, liver damage with high doses
  • Fatigue or dizziness (in rare cases)

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to paracetamol or any other ingredient in this suspension.
  • Severe liver impairment or active severe liver disease.
  • Use in infants below the minimum age stated on the packaging, unless directed by a doctor.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Do not take or give Avadol together with any other medicine that also contains paracetamol, including other cough, cold, or fever products, to avoid exceeding the maximum daily paracetamol dose.
  • Long-term or high-dose use together with warfarin may increase the anticoagulant effect; occasional doses are not usually a concern, but regular combined use should be discussed with a doctor.
  • Long-term heavy alcohol use increases the risk of liver problems when paracetamol is also taken regularly, and should be avoided in combination.
  • No significant food interactions are established; Avadol can be given with or without food.

Quick Tips

  • Always use the dosing cup or spoon provided, not a household spoon, to avoid under- or over-dosing.
  • Shake the bottle before each use for a consistent dose.
  • Double-check the mL amount against the dosing table for the correct age or weight band before giving a dose.
  • Check every other medicine in the house for paracetamol content before giving an additional dose.
  • Keep the bottle out of reach of children, as its fruit flavour may encourage them to drink it unsupervised.
  • Note the date the bottle was opened so it is not used beyond the recommended in-use period.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Active ingredient: Paracetamol 250mg per 5ml — this is a single-ingredient suspension; it does not contain a second active ingredient despite the product name.
  • Paracetamol belongs to the non-opioid analgesic and antipyretic class of ingredients.
  • Supplied as an orange or strawberry-flavoured oral suspension in a 90ml bottle.
  • Full excipient (inactive ingredient) information, including colouring and flavouring agents, is not publicly disclosed; refer to the product packaging or a pharmacist for a complete list.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Use with caution in anyone with existing liver or kidney impairment, and seek medical advice on the appropriate dose first. Check all other medicines being taken or given at the same time for paracetamol content before use, since paracetamol is a common ingredient in many combination cough, cold, and fever products. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time needed.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Seek medical advice if fever persists beyond 2-3 days, or pain persists beyond 5 days, despite regular use. Seek urgent medical attention if an overdose is suspected or taken, even without symptoms, and if any sign of an allergic reaction or liver problem (such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine) develops.
