Overview

Biofreeze Gel is a topical menthol gel that is applied directly to the skin. Its active ingredient is menthol at 10.5%, a cooling compound derived from mint that is commonly found in external over-the-counter products. The clear gel texture spreads easily and dries without a heavy or greasy film.

Besides menthol, the formula contains isopropyl alcohol, carbomer, camphor, glycerin and purified water, together with herbal extracts including arnica, aloe vera and green tea. Carbomer forms the gel base, glycerin acts as a humectant, and the alcohol helps the gel spread and dry quickly on the skin. The product produces a cooling sensation on contact and is intended for external use on intact skin only.

Biofreeze Gel is sold over the counter and can be ordered through DoctorOnCall for delivery in Malaysia and Singapore. The gel format gives customers full control over how much they apply and is easy to spread with clean fingertips over a larger skin area. Customers are advised to read the pack label, follow the directions and ask a pharmacist if they have sensitive skin or take other medicines.

Directions for Use

For external use only. Clean and dry the skin before application, and wash your hands before and after applying the gel.

  1. Squeeze or scoop out a small amount of gel, enough to cover the skin area in a thin layer.
  2. Gently spread the gel over the intact skin and allow it to dry. Do not rub in aggressively.
  3. Do not apply heat such as a heating pad or hot compress to the treated area, and do not cover it with a tight bandage.
  4. Close the tube or container tightly after each use.

Avoid contact with the eyes, lips, inside of the nose and other mucous membranes. Do not apply to cuts, wounds, sunburned or irritated skin.

Dosage

Adults and children 12 years and above: Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area, no more than 3 to 4 times in 24 hours, unless your doctor or pharmacist advises otherwise.

Children under 12 years: Do not use unless advised by a doctor.

Missed application: Do not double up. Apply the next time as needed without exceeding the maximum frequency.

See a doctor if symptoms last more than 7 days or return within a few days, or if the skin becomes irritated.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild redness, warmth or a temporary tingling or burning sensation where the gel is applied.
  • Common: Dryness or tightness of the skin at the application site.
  • Common: Itching or a mild rash around the application area.
  • Serious: Severe burning, blistering or swelling of the skin, which may indicate chemical irritation and requires the gel to be washed off and the product stopped.
  • Serious: Signs of a severe allergic reaction such as widespread rash, facial swelling or difficulty breathing, which need emergency medical care.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity (allergy) to menthol, camphor or any other ingredient in the gel.
  • Known allergy to arnica or to plants of the daisy family (Asteraceae/Compositae).
  • Application to open wounds, cuts, broken, infected or severely sunburned skin.
  • Application to the eyes, inside the nose, mouth or other mucous membranes.
  • Use under tight occlusive dressings or together with heat sources on the same skin area.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No significant interactions with oral medicines are expected, because the gel is applied externally and very little is absorbed.
  • Avoid using other creams, gels, ointments or medicated rubs on the same skin area at the same time.
  • Do not use heating pads, hot compresses or electric blankets over the treated area, as heat combined with menthol can increase the risk of burns.
  • No known food interactions.
  • The formula contains alcohol and can be flammable, so keep it away from flames until fully dry.

Quick Tips

  • Use clean fingertips, or wash your hands straight after application.
  • A thin layer is sufficient; applying more does not make the product stronger.
  • Avoid applying the gel right before a hot shower, sauna or swim.
  • Patch test on a small area of skin first if your skin is sensitive.
  • Close the cap tightly after use to stop the gel drying out.
  • Stop using and rinse the area with water if burning or redness persists.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

Relevant Information

Precautions: For external use only on intact skin. Avoid the eyes, mouth and mucous membranes, and do not use with heat or tight bandages. Keep away from flames as the formula contains alcohol. Seek advice before use in children under 12, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you have a chronic skin condition.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Stop use and see a doctor or pharmacist if you develop severe redness, blistering, swelling, persistent burning or any sign of allergy. Speak to a healthcare professional if symptoms last more than 7 days, worsen, or clear up and return within a few days.
