Overview

Biofreeze Roll-On is a topical menthol preparation supplied in a roll-on applicator, designed so the product can be applied to the skin without touching it with your fingers. Its active ingredient is menthol at 10.5%, a compound naturally obtained from mint oils that is widely used in external over-the-counter products. The smooth rolling ball spreads a measured film of the clear formula across the skin surface, and the product leaves a cooling sensation on application.

The formula combines menthol with isopropyl alcohol, carbomer, camphor, glycerin and propylene glycol, together with botanical extracts such as arnica, aloe and green tea. Carbomer gives the product its body, glycerin and propylene glycol act as humectants and solvents, and the alcohol base allows the formula to spread quickly and dry on the skin. Because it contains alcohol and camphor, the product is strictly for external use on intact skin.

Biofreeze Roll-On is a menthol-based topical that is sold over the counter and is available through DoctorOnCall for customers in Malaysia and Singapore. The roll-on format is convenient to carry in a gym bag, handbag or desk drawer, and it keeps the applicator clean compared with open tubs. Customers are encouraged to read the pack label, follow the directions carefully and speak with a pharmacist about any existing skin conditions or medicines before use.

Directions for Use

For external use only. Wash and dry the skin area before application, and wash your hands after handling the product.

  1. Remove the cap and roll the ball directly over the intact skin area, applying a thin, even layer.
  2. Allow the area to dry for a few moments. Do not rub in vigorously and do not cover with tight bandages or plastic wraps.
  3. Do not apply heat such as a heating pad, hot water bottle or hot compress over the treated area.
  4. Replace the cap firmly after each use to prevent leakage and evaporation.

Avoid contact with the eyes, lips, inside of the nose and other mucous membranes. Do not apply to wounds, cuts, sunburned, cracked or irritated skin.

Dosage

Adults and children 12 years and above: Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area, no more than 3 to 4 times in 24 hours, unless your doctor or pharmacist advises otherwise.

Children under 12 years: Do not use unless advised by a doctor.

Missed application: There is no need to make up for a missed application. Simply apply the next time as needed, without exceeding the maximum frequency above.

Stop self-care and see a doctor if the skin area becomes irritated, or if symptoms last more than 7 days or return within a few days.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild skin redness, warmth or a temporary burning or stinging sensation at the site of application.
  • Common: Dryness or tightness of the skin where the alcohol-based formula was applied.
  • Common: Itching or a mild rash around the application area.
  • Serious: Severe burning, blistering or swelling of the skin, which may indicate chemical irritation and needs the product to be stopped and washed off immediately.
  • Serious: Signs of a severe allergic reaction such as widespread rash, facial swelling or difficulty breathing, which require emergency medical care.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity (allergy) to menthol, camphor or any other ingredient in the formula.
  • Known allergy to arnica or to plants of the daisy family (Asteraceae/Compositae), since the formula contains arnica extract.
  • Application to open wounds, cuts, broken, infected or severely sunburned skin.
  • Application to the eyes, inside the nose, mouth or other mucous membranes.
  • Use together with heat sources or tight occlusive dressings over the same skin area.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No significant interactions with oral medicines are expected, because the product is applied externally and very little is absorbed.
  • Avoid applying other topical products, such as creams, gels or medicated rubs, to the same skin area at the same time.
  • Do not use heating pads, hot compresses or electric blankets over the treated area, as combined heat and menthol can increase the risk of skin burns.
  • No known food interactions.
  • Alcohol-based products can be flammable, so keep away from flames, cigarettes and hot surfaces until fully dry.

Quick Tips

  • Test the product on a small patch of skin first if you have sensitive skin.
  • Roll the applicator lightly; pressing too hard does not increase how much is applied.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after application, and before touching your eyes or face.
  • Do not apply immediately before or after a hot shower, sauna or swim.
  • Keep the cap on when not in use and store upright to reduce leakage.
  • Stop using the product and wash the area with water if you notice persistent burning or redness.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

Biofreeze Roll-On contains menthol (10.5%) as its active ingredient, along with inactive ingredients such as isopropyl alcohol, carbomer, camphor, glycerin, propylene glycol, and herbal extracts like arnica, aloe, and green tea.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Use on intact skin only and avoid the eyes, mouth and mucous membranes. Do not use with heat or tight bandages. Patch test if you have sensitive skin, and keep the product away from flames because it contains alcohol. Seek professional advice before use in children under 12, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you have a chronic skin condition.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Stop use and see a doctor or pharmacist if you develop severe redness, blistering, swelling, persistent burning or signs of an allergic reaction. Also speak to a healthcare professional if your symptoms last longer than 7 days, get worse, or clear up and return within a few days.
