Overview

Cozaar 100mg Tablet contains losartan potassium 100mg, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy. It is also used to slow the progression of kidney disease in people with type 2 diabetes.

Losartan works by blocking the AT1 receptor that angiotensin II normally binds to, preventing this hormone from narrowing blood vessels and retaining sodium. This allows blood vessels to relax, lowering blood pressure and reducing strain on the heart and kidneys.

How it Works

Losartan and its active metabolite selectively and competitively block the AT1 angiotensin II receptor in blood vessels and the adrenal gland, preventing vasoconstriction and aldosterone release. Losartan also has a mild uricosuric effect, modestly lowering blood uric acid levels.

Directions for Use

Take Cozaar 100mg Tablet at about the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Continue taking it even if you feel well, as high blood pressure usually has no symptoms, and do not stop suddenly without consulting your doctor.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Cozaar 100mg Tablet for most adults with hypertension is 50mg once daily, which your doctor may increase up to 100mg once daily depending on your blood pressure response, or reduce for patients with a history of liver problems or reduced fluid volume. Always take losartan exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cozaar 100mg Tablet used for?

Cozaar 100mg Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure, to reduce the risk of stroke in certain patients, and to help slow kidney damage in people with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease. Your doctor will confirm the specific reason it has been prescribed for you.

How long does it take for losartan to work?

Losartan starts lowering blood pressure within a few hours, but the full effect on blood pressure is usually seen after about 3-6 weeks of regular use.

Can I stop taking this medicine once my blood pressure is normal?

What should I do if I miss a dose of Cozaar 100mg Tablet?
