Overview

Dermovate 0.05% Ointment is supplied as an ointment, with Clobetasol Propionate 0.05%. It is supplied in pack sizes of 100g and 15g.

No prescription is required for this product, as it is a non-prescription medicine. This page is limited to product, safety and handling information.

If you would like guidance before buying, you can speak to a doctor or pharmacist through an online consultation on DoctorOnCall. Orders are dispensed by a registered pharmacist and delivered to your address.

Directions for Use

Dermovate 0.05% Ointment must be used exactly as prescribed by the doctor. A thin layer is applied to the affected area, usually once or twice daily, and gently rubbed in until absorbed. It should not be applied to the face, groin, underarms, or broken skin unless specifically instructed, and should never be used under occlusive dressings unless the doctor has explicitly advised this.

Dosage

Treatment courses with Dermovate 0.05% Ointment are typically restricted to a maximum of a few weeks at a time, with a set weekly quantity limit advised by the prescribing doctor to reduce systemic absorption risk. The doctor will reassess the skin condition before authorising any further course, and total body surface area treated at any one time is usually limited.

Storage Instructions

Store Dermovate 0.05% Ointment below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the tube tightly closed after each use and well out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Burning, stinging or irritation at the application site
  • Dry or cracked skin
  • Skin thinning (with prolonged use)
  • Changes in skin color
  • Stretch marks
  • Acne or increased hair growth on treated areas

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Clobetasol Propionate or any other ingredient in the ointment
  • Untreated bacterial, viral, or fungal skin infections at the application site
  • Rosacea, perioral dermatitis, or acne vulgaris
  • Use on the face, groin, or underarms without explicit medical instruction
  • Use in children without close specialist supervision, as they are more susceptible to systemic effects

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Concurrent use with other potent topical corticosteroids increases the risk of skin thinning and systemic absorption
  • Use with occlusive dressings significantly increases systemic absorption and must only be done if specifically directed by the doctor
  • Applying other topical medicated products to the same area should be discussed with the prescribing doctor

Quick Tips

  • Use strictly for the duration and quantity limits set by your doctor, never longer
  • Apply only a thin layer; more product does not improve results and increases risk
  • Never use on the face or skin folds unless your doctor has specifically instructed this
  • Attend all follow-up appointments so your doctor can monitor your skin and overall response
  • Report any signs of infection, unusual skin changes, or systemic symptoms promptly

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Clobetasol Propionate 0.05%
  • Ointment base with occlusive, emollient excipients

Relevant Information

Dermovate 0.05% Ointment is reserved for severe, treatment-resistant inflammatory skin conditions due to its superpotent classification, and its use requires careful medical oversight to balance effective control of the condition against the risk of significant skin and systemic side effects. Doctors typically prescribe it as a short, targeted course, often followed by a step-down to a less potent steroid once the condition has improved, to minimise cumulative steroid exposure.
