Esomac 40mg Tablet

Esomac 40mg Tablet contains esomeprazole 40mg, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is used to treat gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and erosive oesophagitis, to heal and prevent gastric and duodenal ulcers, and as part of combination therapy to eradicate Helicobacter pylori infection. This formulation is gastro-resistant (enteric-coated), designed to protect the medicine from stomach acid until it reaches the small intestine for absorption.

Esomeprazole is the S-isomer of omeprazole and works by irreversibly blocking the H+/K+-ATPase proton pump in the cells lining the stomach – the final step in acid production – which significantly reduces gastric acid secretion, relieves acid-related symptoms, and allows irritated or damaged tissue to heal.

By irreversibly binding to the proton pump on acid-producing stomach cells, esomeprazole blocks the final common step of gastric acid secretion, regardless of what triggered it. This produces a marked and sustained reduction in stomach acidity, easing reflux symptoms and creating conditions that allow ulcers and inflamed tissue in the oesophagus and stomach to heal.

Take Esomac 40mg Tablet at least one hour before a meal, preferably in the morning. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water – do not crush or chew it, as it is gastro-resistant. If you have difficulty swallowing tablets, ask your pharmacist about alternative ways to take this medicine.

The usual dose of Esomac 40mg Tablet is one 40mg tablet once daily for 4-8 weeks for GERD or ulcer healing, depending on your condition. When used as part of H. pylori eradication therapy, it is usually combined with two antibiotics for a shorter course. Your doctor will determine the exact dose and duration appropriate for your condition.

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

• Known hypersensitivity to esomeprazole, other proton pump inhibitors, or any ingredient in this product
• Concomitant use with nelfinavir (a medicine used for HIV)
• Severe hepatic impairment (dose adjustment required)
• Unexplained or persistent symptoms (e.g. unintentional weight loss, difficulty swallowing) should be investigated by your doctor before starting long-term treatment

• Clopidogrel’s antiplatelet effect may be reduced when taken with esomeprazole – discuss alternatives with your doctor if you take clopidogrel
• Diazepam levels may be increased
• Warfarin’s blood-thinning effect may be enhanced, requiring closer INR monitoring
• Methotrexate (at high doses) clearance may be reduced, increasing the risk of methotrexate toxicity

• Take at least an hour before breakfast for the best effect
• Complete the full course if this medicine is part of H. pylori eradication therapy, even if you feel better
• Report tingling, numbness, or unusual tiredness (possible signs of vitamin B12 deficiency) if you are on long-term treatment
• Report muscle cramps, spasms, or an irregular heartbeat (possible signs of low magnesium) during long-term treatment
• Avoid unnecessary long-term use without your doctor periodically reviewing your treatment
