Overview

Exelon 3mg Capsule contains rivastigmine 3mg, a cholinesterase inhibitor used to treat mild-to-moderate dementia of the Alzheimer’s type, and in some patients, mild-to-moderate dementia associated with Parkinson’s disease. It does not cure the underlying disease but can help improve or stabilise memory, thinking, and everyday functioning for a period of time.

Rivastigmine works by reversibly blocking two enzymes (acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase) that normally break down acetylcholine, a chemical messenger in the brain important for memory and learning. By slowing this breakdown, rivastigmine increases acetylcholine levels at nerve junctions, supporting nerve cell communication in areas of the brain affected by dementia.

How it Works

By inhibiting acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase, rivastigmine reduces the breakdown of acetylcholine in the brain, increasing the amount available to support communication between nerve cells in regions affected by Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease dementia. This can temporarily improve symptoms, although it does not stop the underlying disease from progressing.

Directions for Use

Take Exelon 3mg Capsule capsules with food, in the morning and evening, to help reduce nausea and stomach upset. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water – do not open, chew, or crush it. Take your doses at about the same times each day.

Dosage

Exelon 3mg Capsule 3mg is typically the second dose step in the standard oral titration schedule, usually reached after your doctor has confirmed you are tolerating the starting 1.5mg dose well. Your doctor will start at a low dose and increase it gradually, generally not more often than every two weeks, based on how well you tolerate the medicine, up to the maximum dose that controls your symptoms. Never increase, decrease, or stop your dose yourself – dose changes must always be directed by your doctor.

Quick Tips

  • Always take with food to reduce nausea and stomach upset
  • Never adjust your own dose – increases are done gradually and only by your doctor
  • If you miss several days of doses in a row, contact your doctor before restarting, as your dose may need to be restarted at a lower level

  • Caregivers should help supervise dosing, as memory difficulties can make it easy to miss or duplicate a dose

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Exelon 3mg Capsule used for?

Exelon 3mg Capsule is used to treat mild-to-moderate dementia associated with Alzheimer’s disease, and in some patients, dementia associated with Parkinson’s disease. It can help with symptoms such as memory, attention, and daily functioning.

Why does rivastigmine commonly cause nausea, and how can I reduce it?

Nausea and vomiting are dose-related side effects, especially common when your dose is increased. Taking each dose with food and having your doctor increase the dose gradually both help reduce this.

Can I increase my own dose if I don’t notice any improvement?

No. Dose increases must only be made by your doctor, and are usually done gradually, no more than once every two weeks, based on how well you tolerate the medicine. Increasing the dose yourself can significantly worsen side effects.

What happens if I miss several doses of rivastigmine in a row?

If you have missed several days of doses, contact your doctor before restarting, since your doctor may need to restart you at a lower dose and re-titrate upward to avoid side effects.

Does Exelon 3mg Capsule cure Alzheimer’s disease?

No. Exelon 3mg Capsule does not cure Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease dementia and does not stop the underlying disease from progressing, but it may help improve or stabilise symptoms for a period of time.
