Exelon Patch 10 (9.5mg/24h) Transdermal Patch

Exelon Patch 10 (9.5mg/24h) Transdermal Patch is a transdermal patch that delivers rivastigmine at a rate of 9.5mg/24hr, a cholinesterase inhibitor used to treat mild-to-moderate dementia associated with Alzheimer’s disease, and sometimes dementia associated with Parkinson’s disease. This is the standard maintenance-dose patch, typically used after the starting dose if it is well tolerated.

Rivastigmine works by inhibiting the enzymes acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase, which normally break down acetylcholine, a chemical messenger important for memory and learning. By slowing this breakdown, the patch raises acetylcholine levels in the brain, which can improve cognitive function and daily functioning, though it does not cure or reverse the underlying disease.

Rivastigmine inhibits both acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase, the enzymes responsible for breaking down acetylcholine in the brain. Increasing available acetylcholine supports communication between nerve cells involved in memory and thinking, which can temporarily improve or stabilise cognitive symptoms in dementia.

Apply the patch to clean, dry, hairless, and intact skin on the upper or lower back, upper arm, or chest, pressing it firmly in place for about 30 seconds. Remove the old patch before applying the new one, and always apply the new patch to a different site – do not reapply to the same spot within 14 days. Never wear two patches at the same time.

Apply one Exelon Patch 10 (9.5mg/24h) Transdermal Patch patch every 24 hours, replacing it with a new patch at a different skin site at the same time each day. Your doctor will determine the right delivery rate for you and may adjust it gradually over time based on your response and tolerability, typically after a minimum of several weeks at each dose.

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

• Known hypersensitivity to rivastigmine or other carbamate derivatives
• Previous severe skin reaction to a rivastigmine patch
• Severe hepatic impairment (use with caution and close medical supervision)

• Other cholinergic medicines may have an additive effect and increase the risk of side effects
• Anticholinergic medicines may reduce the effectiveness of rivastigmine
• Muscle relaxants of the succinylcholine type used during anaesthesia can have a prolonged effect – always tell your doctor, dentist, or anaesthetist that you are using this patch before any surgery or procedure
• NSAIDs may increase gastrointestinal side effects when combined with rivastigmine’s cholinergic effect on stomach acid

• Apply to a clean, dry, hairless area of skin – upper or lower back, upper arm, or chest
• Remove the old patch before applying a new one, and rotate the application site each day
• Never reapply a patch to the same skin site within 14 days
• Never wear two patches at the same time, even if a dose is missed
• Tell your doctor, dentist, or surgeon that you are using this patch before any operation or procedure
• Fold used patches in half with the sticky side inward and dispose of them safely, away from children and pets, as used patches still contain active medicine
