Overview

Imigran 50mg Tablet contains sumatriptan 50mg, a triptan (5-HT1 receptor agonist) used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks, with or without aura. This product is manufactured by GSK (GlaxoSmithKline), the originator of the Imigran brand of sumatriptan. It is used to treat a migraine attack that has already started, and is not used to prevent migraines from occurring.

Sumatriptan works by selectively stimulating 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D serotonin receptors, which constricts the abnormally dilated blood vessels around the brain and reduces the release of pro-inflammatory substances involved in triggering migraine pain.

How it Works

Sumatriptan binds to 5-HT1B/1D serotonin receptors on cranial blood vessels and nerve endings, causing constriction of the dilated vessels associated with migraine and inhibiting the release of neuropeptides that drive pain and inflammation along the trigeminal nerve pathway.

Directions for Use

Take Imigran 50mg Tablet as soon as migraine symptoms (headache) begin, rather than during the aura alone. Swallow the tablet whole with water; it can be taken with or without food. If your migraine attacks do not respond, or you find yourself needing it very frequently, speak to your doctor rather than increasing the dose yourself.

Dosage

The usual dose of Imigran 50mg Tablet is one tablet taken as soon as possible after a migraine attack begins. If the migraine returns after initially improving, your doctor may advise a further dose after a minimum interval, but there is a maximum number of doses allowed in 24 hours. This medicine is not for daily or preventive use – follow your doctor’s specific instructions.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Dizziness or drowsiness
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Flushing or feeling hot
  • Chest tightness or pressure
  • Nausea or dry mouth
  • Fatigue or weakness

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to sumatriptan or any ingredient in this product
  • Ischaemic heart disease, history of heart attack, or Prinzmetal’s (variant) angina
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • History of stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA)

Drug / Food Interactions

  • SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAOIs (antidepressants) taken together may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome
  • Ergotamine or other ergot-type medicines should not be taken within 24 hours of sumatriptan due to prolonged vessel-narrowing effects
  • Other triptans should not be used within 24 hours of each other
  • MAO-A inhibitors can raise sumatriptan blood levels and should generally be avoided

Quick Tips

  • Take at the first sign of migraine headache, not just during aura
  • Do not exceed the maximum number of doses your doctor has specified in 24 hours
  • This medicine is for treating an attack, not for daily prevention
  • Rest in a quiet, dark room after taking it if possible
  • Seek medical advice if your migraines change in pattern or severity, or if you need this medicine very frequently
  • Do not use if you have known heart disease, uncontrolled hypertension, or a history of stroke without discussing this with your doctor first

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Imigran 50mg Tablet used for?

Imigran 50mg Tablet is used to treat a migraine attack once it has started, including the headache and associated symptoms such as nausea, sensitivity to light, and sensitivity to sound.

Can I use this medicine to prevent migraines?

No, sumatriptan is only for treating an acute migraine attack, not for preventing future attacks. Your doctor can prescribe a separate preventive medicine if you have frequent migraines.

Why can’t I use this if I have heart disease?

Sumatriptan can narrow blood vessels, including those supplying the heart, which can be dangerous for people with existing heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or a history of stroke. Your doctor will assess your cardiovascular risk before prescribing it.

Can I take sumatriptan with my antidepressant?

Combining sumatriptan with SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAOIs can increase the risk of a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, including antidepressants, before starting sumatriptan.

What should I do if my migraine comes back after the medicine seems to work?

If your migraine returns after initially improving, your doctor may allow a second dose after a minimum time interval, up to the maximum allowed in 24 hours. Do not take a second dose if the first one had no effect at all – speak to your doctor instead.
