Overview

Latamolol Eye Drops Solution is a fixed-dose combination eye drop containing latanoprost and timolol maleate, used to lower raised pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) in open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension, when a single medicine alone has not adequately controlled it.

It combines two complementary mechanisms: latanoprost, a prostaglandin analogue that increases the natural drainage of fluid out of the eye, and timolol, a beta-blocker that reduces the amount of fluid the eye produces. Together, these lower intraocular pressure more effectively than either ingredient used on its own.

How it Works

Latanoprost increases the outflow of aqueous humour (the fluid inside the eye) through the uveoscleral drainage pathway, while timolol blocks beta-receptors in the ciliary body, reducing the production of aqueous humour. By simultaneously increasing drainage and reducing production, intraocular pressure is lowered more than with either action alone.

Directions for Use

Wash your hands before use. Tilt your head back, gently pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket, and instil one drop without letting the dropper tip touch the eye or eyelid. Close your eyes gently and press a finger against the inner corner of the eye for about a minute to reduce drainage into the tear duct and limit systemic absorption of timolol. If you wear soft contact lenses, remove them before using the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. If using other eye drops, space them at least 5 minutes apart.

Dosage

The usual dose of Latamolol Eye Drops Solution is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily, typically in the morning, exactly as prescribed by your ophthalmologist. Do not use more often than prescribed, as more frequent use of latanoprost-containing drops can paradoxically reduce the pressure-lowering effect.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Eye redness
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensation of something in the eye
  • Increased brown pigmentation in the iris or eyelashes
  • Growth of eyelashes
  • Mild eye discomfort or stinging after application

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to latanoprost, timolol, or any ingredient in this product
  • Asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or a history of bronchospasm (due to the beta-blocker component)
  • Severe bradycardia (slow heart rate), second- or third-degree heart block, or uncontrolled heart failure
  • Active eye inflammation (uveitis) unless directed otherwise by your ophthalmologist

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Oral beta-blockers or other medicines that slow the heart rate (e.g. verapamil, diltiazem) may add to timolol’s effect on heart rate and blood pressure
  • Other prostaglandin analogue eye drops should not be used at the same time as this product
  • Oral or other eye-drop calcium channel blockers may increase the risk of conduction disturbances when combined with the timolol component
  • Inform your doctor of all medicines you use, including other eye drops, as some can interact with the beta-blocker component even when applied to the eye

Quick Tips

  • Apply this eye drop at the same time each day, usually in the morning
  • Press gently on the inner corner of your eye after each drop to reduce systemic absorption
  • Remove soft contact lenses before use and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them
  • Tell every doctor and dentist you see that you use an eye drop containing a beta-blocker, especially before any new heart or breathing medicine is prescribed
  • Attend all scheduled eye pressure checks, as glaucoma has no early symptoms and needs regular monitoring
  • Do not stop using this medicine without consulting your ophthalmologist, even if your eyes feel normal

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Latamolol Eye Drops Solution used for?

Latamolol Eye Drops Solution is used to lower raised pressure inside the eye in open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension, usually when a single eye pressure medicine has not been enough on its own.

Why does this eye drop contain two medicines instead of one?

Latanoprost increases the drainage of fluid out of the eye, while timolol reduces the amount of fluid the eye produces. Combining them in one drop lowers eye pressure more than either ingredient alone, while being more convenient than using two separate bottles.

Can this eye drop affect more than just my eyes?

A small amount of timolol can be absorbed into the bloodstream through the eye, which is why it is not suitable for people with asthma, certain heart rhythm problems, or heart failure. Always tell your doctor about your full medical history before starting this medicine.

Why do my eyelashes or eye colour seem to be changing?

Latanoprost can gradually darken the iris and eyelid skin, and can lengthen and thicken eyelashes, with continued use. This is a recognised effect of the medicine and should be discussed with your ophthalmologist if it concerns you.

Can I wear contact lenses while using this eye drop?

Remove soft contact lenses before applying the drop, as the preservative can be absorbed by the lens, and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Latamolol Eye Drops Solution?

Apply the missed drop as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not apply an extra drop to make up for it.
