Overview

Lodoz 2.5/6.25mg Tablet is a fixed-dose combination containing bisoprolol and hydrochlorothiazide (2.5mg/6.25mg), used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in patients who are not adequately controlled on either component alone. Bisoprolol is a beta-blocker and hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic (‘water pill’).

The two ingredients lower blood pressure through complementary mechanisms: bisoprolol slows and steadies the heart rate and reduces the force of its contractions, while hydrochlorothiazide helps the kidneys remove excess salt and water from the body, reducing blood volume. Together they provide greater blood pressure reduction than either medicine used alone.

How it Works

Bisoprolol selectively blocks beta-1 adrenergic receptors in the heart, reducing heart rate, contractility, and the heart’s oxygen demand. Hydrochlorothiazide acts on the kidney’s distal convoluted tubule, inhibiting sodium and chloride reabsorption so that more sodium and water are excreted in urine, which lowers circulating blood volume and, over time, reduces blood vessel resistance.

Directions for Use

Take Lodoz 2.5/6.25mg Tablet once daily in the morning, with or without food, at about the same time each day, to avoid the increased urination from the diuretic component disturbing your sleep. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not stop this medicine abruptly, as suddenly stopping a beta-blocker can trigger a rebound rise in heart rate, blood pressure, or chest pain – your doctor will taper the dose gradually if it needs to be discontinued.

Dosage

Lodoz 2.5/6.25mg Tablet is usually taken once daily in the morning, at the strength your doctor has determined is right for your blood pressure control. Your doctor will periodically review your response, blood pressure readings, and blood electrolyte and kidney function tests while you are on this combination.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lodoz 2.5/6.25mg Tablet used for?

Lodoz 2.5/6.25mg Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure in patients whose blood pressure is not fully controlled by a single medicine, combining a beta-blocker and a diuretic in one tablet.

Why do I need to take this medicine in the morning?

Taking it in the morning helps the diuretic effect occur during waking hours, so you are less likely to need to urinate frequently during the night.

Can I stop taking this medicine once my blood pressure is normal?

No, do not stop without consulting your doctor. High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, and abruptly stopping a beta-blocker can cause a rebound increase in heart rate or blood pressure, or chest pain.

Will this medicine affect my blood test results?

Yes, your doctor will periodically check your blood potassium, sodium, and kidney function, as the diuretic component can affect these values over time.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Lodoz 2.5/6.25mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
