Overview

Nasehaler 50mcg Nasal Spray contains Mometasone furoate, equivalent to 50mcg per spray and is presented as a nasal spray. It is supplied in a pack size of 140 doses.

It is classified as a non-prescription medicine, so no prescription is needed to order it. Under Malaysian rules for medicine information, this page carries product, safety and handling information only.

You can consult a doctor or pharmacist online on DoctorOnCall about this product before or after you order. Every order is checked by a registered pharmacist before it is delivered. Always read the label and the leaflet supplied with the pack.

Directions for Use

Before first use, shake the bottle gently and prime the pump as directed on the leaflet until a fine mist is produced. Blow your nose gently to clear the nasal passages, tilt your head slightly forward, and insert the nozzle into one nostril, aiming slightly away from the centre of the nose. Press down firmly while breathing in gently through the nose, then repeat for the other nostril as directed. Use at the same time each day for the best effect, and clean the nozzle regularly as instructed to prevent blockage.

Dosage

The typical adult and adolescent dose is 2 sprays (50mcg each, 100mcg total) into each nostril once daily, which your doctor may reduce to 1 spray per nostril once daily as symptoms improve for maintenance. Children’s doses, where prescribed, are lower and determined by the doctor based on age. It may take several days of regular use to notice the full benefit, so continue as prescribed even if relief is not immediate, and do not exceed the dose your doctor has specified.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the carton and bottle. Once opened, the spray should generally be discarded after the period stated on the packaging (commonly around 2 to 3 months), as the medicine’s stability and the device’s spray mechanism cannot be assured beyond that.

Storage Instructions

Store below 25°C to 30°C in an upright position, away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not freeze. Keep the cap on when not in use and store out of the reach and sight of children.

Side Effects

  • Nasal dryness, irritation, or a burning sensation
  • Occasional nosebleeds (epistaxis)
  • Headache
  • Sore throat or an unpleasant taste/smell after use
  • Rarely, nasal septum irritation or, with long-term high-dose use, effects on the lining of the nose
  • Very rarely, symptoms of systemic steroid absorption if significantly overused, such as unusual tiredness — report any concerning or persistent symptoms to your doctor

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to mometasone furoate or any ingredient in the formulation
  • Untreated local nasal infection (bacterial, viral, or fungal), which should be addressed before or alongside steroid use as directed by your doctor
  • Recent nasal surgery, nasal trauma, or nasal septal ulcers, until healing is confirmed by your doctor
  • Active or recent tuberculosis, or untreated systemic fungal, bacterial, or viral infections, requires caution and medical assessment
  • Should not be used for longer than prescribed without follow-up, particularly in children, due to the potential for growth-related effects with prolonged high-dose steroid use

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Certain antifungal and antiviral medicines (such as ritonavir or ketoconazole) can increase mometasone levels in the body if taken together, potentially increasing the risk of steroid-related side effects — inform your doctor of all medicines you take
  • Using other nasal or inhaled corticosteroids at the same time may increase your total steroid exposure; your doctor will advise if this combination is appropriate
  • No specific food interactions are known for this nasal spray
  • Inform your doctor if you are using other nasal sprays or decongestants, as your doctor may advise on the order or spacing of use

Quick Tips

  • Use the spray consistently at the same time each day, as its full benefit builds up over several days rather than acting immediately
  • Blow your nose gently before use and aim the spray away from the centre of the nose (the septum) to reduce the risk of nosebleeds
  • Do not share your nasal spray device with anyone else
  • Clean the nozzle regularly as directed to prevent blockage or contamination
  • Attend follow-up reviews with your doctor, especially for long-term or paediatric use
  • Contact your doctor if you experience recurrent nosebleeds, persistent nasal pain, or symptoms that do not improve despite regular use

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Mometasone furoate, equivalent to 50mcg per spray (active ingredient)
  • Microcrystalline cellulose and carboxymethylcellulose sodium, or similar suspending agents
  • Glycerin (humectant)
  • Benzalkonium chloride or a comparable preservative
  • Purified water as the vehicle base

Relevant Information

Nasehaler is intended for regular, preventive-style use to control ongoing allergic nasal symptoms rather than as a one-off treatment for sudden congestion, and its effect builds gradually rather than providing instant relief like a decongestant. Your doctor will typically review your symptoms periodically to confirm the diagnosis remains allergic rhinitis (rather than an infection or other cause), assess whether the dose can be reduced once symptoms are controlled, and monitor for any local nasal side effects with continued use. Long-term, high-dose use in children should be monitored by a doctor given the potential, though generally low, effect of corticosteroids on growth.
