Overview

Pernaton Gel Forte is a topical gel built around Green-Lipped Mussel Extract (Perna canaliculus) and glycosaminoglycans as its core natural ingredients, combined with menthol, cayenne pepper extract (capsaicin), eucalyptus and pine essential oils, and camphor. The Pernaton brand is internationally recognised for its Green-Lipped Mussel-based topical gel range, sold in Malaysia alongside its other regional variants.

The product is classified as an OTC (Over-the-Counter) external topical preparation, meaning it can be purchased directly from a pharmacy without a doctor’s prescription. The “Forte” formulation is positioned within the Pernaton range as a warming-sensation gel, built around capsaicin and camphor alongside the brand’s signature mussel-extract base, distinguishing it from a purely cooling, menthol-only topical product.

Pernaton Gel Forte is sold in a 125ml tube, a size intended for regular repeat home use, and it is applied and massaged directly into the skin by hand rather than sprayed, which allows more targeted, localised application over specific joints or muscle groups.

Directions for Use

Apply a small amount of Pernaton Gel Forte to clean, dry, unbroken skin and massage gently until absorbed. Apply only to the intended area and avoid the eyes, nose, mouth, and other mucous membranes, as the capsaicin content can cause significant burning if it reaches sensitive tissue. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water immediately after application, and avoid touching your eyes, face, or other sensitive areas until you have washed your hands.

Dosage

Pernaton Gel Forte is an external topical gel rather than an oral medicine, so there is no oral dose to follow. As a general guide, it may be applied to the affected area two to three times a day, or as directed on the product packaging. Do not exceed the frequency stated on the label, and stop use and seek pharmacist or medical advice if there is no improvement after a few days, or if skin irritation develops. Use in young children should follow the age guidance printed on the packaging, with a pharmacist consulted beforehand given its capsaicin content.

Shelf Life

Use Pernaton Gel Forte before the expiry date printed on the tube and outer packaging. Once opened, try to use the tube within the period recommended on the packaging, as the potency of its active plant and mussel-extract ingredients may reduce gradually with repeated opening.

Storage Instructions

Store Pernaton Gel Forte at room temperature below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Keep the tube tightly capped after each use, and store it out of the reach and sight of children given its capsaicin and camphor content.

Side Effects

  • Common: A warming or tingling sensation on the skin at the site of application, which is expected due to the capsaicin content.
  • Common: Temporary skin redness or a noticeable herbal odour on the skin.
  • Common: A burning sensation if too much gel is applied or if the area is covered too soon after application.
  • Serious: Allergic contact dermatitis or a shellfish-allergy skin reaction with itching, rash, swelling, or blistering, which needs prompt medical attention if it occurs.
  • Serious: Severe burning, chemical-type burns, or eye irritation if the gel accidentally reaches the eyes or is applied too heavily, which should be rinsed with plenty of clean water and followed up with medical advice if symptoms persist.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to shellfish or mussels, as Pernaton Gel Forte contains Green-Lipped Mussel Extract derived from a shellfish source.
  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to menthol, capsaicin, eucalyptus, pine oil, camphor, or any other ingredient in the formulation.
  • Application to broken, cut, or infected skin, open wounds, or areas of severe irritation.
  • Application near or in the eyes, inside the nose or mouth, or on other mucous membranes.
  • Use in infants and very young children below the age stated on the product packaging without pharmacist or doctor guidance, given its capsaicin and camphor content.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No clinically significant drug or food interactions are expected with normal external use of Pernaton Gel Forte, as it is applied to the skin rather than taken by mouth.
  • Avoid applying this gel to the same area at the same time as other topical capsaicin-, menthol-, or camphor-containing products, as this may increase the risk of skin irritation or burning.
  • Avoid using a heating pad, hot compress, or tight bandage over a freshly treated area, as this can significantly intensify the warming and burning sensation caused by the capsaicin content.

Quick Tips

  • Do a small patch test on an unaffected area of skin before first use, especially given the capsaicin content.
  • Apply a thin layer only — more gel does not give a stronger effect and increases the risk of a burning sensation.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly right after application, well before touching your eyes, nose, or other sensitive areas.
  • Avoid showering with hot water shortly after applying the gel, as heat can intensify the warming sensation.
  • Keep the tube cap tightly closed between uses to preserve the gel’s texture and potency.
  • Check the expiry date printed on the tube before each use.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

Pernaton Gel Forte contains Green-lipped mussel extract (GLME), menthol, cayenne pepper extract (capsaicin), essential oils such as eucalyptus and pine, and camphor. These ingredients work together to offer anti-inflammatory, warming, and circulation-boosting effects.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Use Pernaton Gel Forte on intact skin only and avoid contact with the eyes, nose, mouth, and other mucous membranes, as its capsaicin content can cause significant burning on sensitive tissue. People with a known shellfish or mussel allergy should avoid this product, given its Green-Lipped Mussel Extract content. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, young children, and people with sensitive or broken skin should check with a pharmacist before use, and the gel should not be used together with a heating pad or hot compress.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Stop using the product and seek medical advice if you develop a skin rash, blistering, severe redness, or persistent burning after application, or if the gel accidentally gets into your eyes and irritation does not settle after rinsing with water. Speak with a pharmacist if there is no improvement in your symptoms after a few days of use, or if you are unsure whether the product is suitable for you, particularly if you have a shellfish allergy.
