Proctosedyl Ointment

Proctosedyl Ointment is a combination topical treatment containing hydrocortisone, a corticosteroid, and cinchocaine hydrochloride, a local anaesthetic, formulated to relieve the pain, itching, swelling, and inflammation associated with haemorrhoids (piles) and other anal conditions such as pruritus ani and anal fissures. The hydrocortisone reduces inflammation and swelling, while the cinchocaine provides fast-acting local numbing to ease pain and discomfort.

Because it contains a corticosteroid and is intended only for short-term use under medical supervision, Proctosedyl Ointment is a prescription medicine in Malaysia. Apply Proctosedyl Ointment to the affected area as directed by your doctor, usually in the morning and evening and after each bowel movement, using the applicator provided for internal application if advised. Wash and dry the area gently before application, and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. Do not use for longer than the duration recommended by your doctor.

Proctosedyl Ointment is typically applied twice daily, with an additional application after each bowel movement if needed, for a short course generally not exceeding about 7 days unless your doctor advises a longer period. Prolonged or repeated use without medical review is not recommended due to the corticosteroid component.

Proctosedyl Ointment remains stable until the expiry date printed on the tube or carton when stored correctly and left unopened. Do not use the ointment after the expiry date, and discard any tube that has been open longer than the manufacturer’s recommended period after opening.

Store Proctosedyl Ointment below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight, and keep it out of the reach of children.

• Fungal, viral, or bacterial infections of the anal or perianal area, including herpes and tuberculosis-related skin conditions
• Known hypersensitivity to hydrocortisone, cinchocaine, or other ointment ingredients
• Use for longer than the period advised by your doctor
• Broken or ulcerated skin unless specifically directed by your doctor
• Use in young children without specific medical advice

• Concurrent use with other topical corticosteroid products on the same area may increase the risk of skin thinning
• Limited systemic absorption means clinically significant drug interactions are uncommon, but your doctor should be informed of all other topical treatments in the area
• Avoid combining with other local anaesthetic products unless advised, to prevent excessive numbing or irritation

• Use Proctosedyl Ointment only for the duration recommended by your doctor, generally no more than about a week
• Clean and dry the affected area gently before each application
• Wash your hands thoroughly after applying the ointment
• Increase dietary fibre and fluid intake to help ease straining, which can worsen haemorrhoids
• See your doctor if symptoms do not improve, worsen, or if you notice rectal bleeding

Proctosedyl Ointment is intended for short-term symptomatic relief and is not a cure for the underlying cause of haemorrhoids or anal irritation.
