Overview

Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large contains Methyl Salicylate (10%), Menthol (6%) and Camphor (3.1%) and is presented as a patch. It is supplied in a pack size of 3s.

It is classified as an over-the-counter (OTC) medicine, so no prescription is needed to order it. Under Malaysian rules for medicine information, this page carries product, safety and handling information only.

You can consult a doctor or pharmacist online on DoctorOnCall about this product before or after you order. Every order is checked by a registered pharmacist before it is delivered. Always read the label and the leaflet supplied with the pack.

Directions for Use

Before applying, clean and thoroughly dry the affected area of skin. Peel off the protective backing and press the patch firmly onto the skin so it adheres well, smoothing out any air bubbles. Do not apply the patch to broken, wounded, irritated, or infected skin, and avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. Do not use a heating pad, hot water bottle, hot compress, or tight bandaging over or near the patch, as added heat can significantly increase how much of the active ingredients are absorbed through the skin, raising the risk of a chemical or thermal burn and of salicylate-related side effects.

Remove the patch after a maximum of 8 hours of continuous wear, and wash your hands after handling it. Check whether any other topical products you are using — such as other medicated balms, gels, sprays, or patches — also contain methyl salicylate, aspirin, or other salicylates, since combining several salicylate-containing products at the same time increases the risk of excessive absorption and toxicity.

Dosage

For adults and children aged 12 years and above, apply one patch to the affected area up to 3 to 4 times a day as needed for pain relief. Each patch should not be worn for longer than 8 hours before it is removed; a fresh patch can then be applied if pain persists and further use is needed within the recommended daily frequency. Continuous use should not exceed 7 days without consulting a doctor or pharmacist. This product is not recommended for children under 12 years of age unless a doctor has been consulted first.

Storage Instructions

Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, heat, and excessive moisture. Keep the pack sealed when not in use to preserve adhesion and potency, and store it well out of the sight and reach of children and pets.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild skin irritation, redness, itching, or a warming/cooling sensation at the site the patch is applied.
  • Serious: Allergic skin reaction (rash, swelling, blistering, or difficulty breathing), a chemical or thermal burn if the patch is overheated (e.g. used with a heating pad) or left on too long, and salicylate toxicity (such as ringing in the ears, nausea, dizziness, or confusion) if the patch is overused or several salicylate-containing products are combined.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy or hypersensitivity to aspirin, methyl salicylate, or other salicylates.
  • Application on broken, wounded, irritated, infected, or recently shaved skin.
  • Use in young children under 12 years of age without prior medical advice.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Although topical absorption is generally low, meaningful interactions can still occur, particularly with prolonged or extensive use.
  • Oral anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin): salicylate absorbed through the skin may add to the blood-thinning effect and increase bleeding risk — check with a pharmacist or doctor if you are on blood-thinning medication.
  • Other salicylate-containing products (aspirin, other medicated topical balms, gels, sprays, or patches): using more than one salicylate-containing product on the body at the same time raises the risk of excessive absorption and salicylate toxicity.
  • No specific food interactions are established for this topical product.

Quick Tips

  • Apply the patch only to clean, completely dry skin for the best adhesion and effect.
  • Never combine the patch with a heating pad, hot water bottle, or hot shower/bath on the same area — the added heat can push absorption to unsafe levels.
  • Set a reminder to remove the patch after 8 hours, even if it still feels effective.
  • Avoid layering more than one patch, or a patch plus another salicylate-based cream or spray, on the same area at the same time.
  • Check other pain relief products in your medicine cabinet for methyl salicylate or aspirin before doubling up.
  • Keep unused patches sealed and stored away from children and pets, as swallowing one can be harmful.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

Each patch contains active ingredients such as:
  • Methyl Salicylate (10%)
  • Menthol (6%)
  • Camphor (3.1%)
This powerful trio helps relieve pain effectively through topical absorption.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a doctor or pharmacist before using this product. It is not recommended for children under 12 years of age. Never use this patch together with a heating pad, hot water bottle, or other external heat source, as this can dangerously increase absorption of the active ingredients through the skin. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes, and do not apply to broken or irritated skin. If you are taking blood-thinning medication or have a known sensitivity to aspirin or salicylates, check with a pharmacist before use.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Stop use and consult a doctor or pharmacist if a rash, itching, or excessive skin irritation develops, if your pain worsens, if symptoms persist for more than 7 days or clear up and then return, or if you notice signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling or difficulty breathing. Seek urgent medical attention if the patch is accidentally swallowed or if you experience symptoms of salicylate toxicity such as ringing in the ears, nausea, or dizziness.
