Overview

Striptan 50mg Tablet contains sumatriptan 50mg, a selective serotonin (5-HT1) receptor agonist known as a triptan, used to treat acute migraine attacks with or without aura in adults. It is not intended to prevent migraine attacks or to treat other types of headache.

Sumatriptan works by stimulating serotonin 5-HT1B/1D receptors on blood vessels in the brain, causing them to constrict, and on nerve endings involved in pain transmission, reducing the release of inflammatory neuropeptides that contribute to migraine pain.

How it Works

Sumatriptan selectively activates 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D serotonin receptors, causing constriction of the dilated blood vessels in the brain that are associated with migraine, and inhibiting the release of pain-signalling neuropeptides from trigeminal nerve endings, which together reduce migraine pain and associated symptoms.

Directions for Use

Swallow the tablet whole with water, as soon as possible after the migraine headache starts (it does not need to be taken during the aura phase). If the first dose does not relieve the migraine, do not take a second dose for the same attack unless advised by your doctor – a lack of response suggests the second dose is unlikely to help.

Dosage

The usual adult dose is one 50mg tablet taken as soon as possible after the onset of a migraine attack. If the migraine returns after initial improvement, a second dose may be taken after at least 2 hours, but the total dose should not exceed the maximum daily amount advised by your doctor.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Ergotamine or ergot-type medicines – must not be used within 24 hours of sumatriptan due to risk of prolonged vasoconstriction
  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or SNRIs – combined use may rarely cause serotonin syndrome
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) – increase sumatriptan blood levels and should generally be avoided together
  • Inform your doctor of all other medicines you are taking, especially other migraine treatments and antidepressants

Quick Tips

  • Take the tablet as early as possible after a migraine attack begins for best effect
  • Do not use more than the maximum number of tablets your doctor has advised in 24 hours
  • Seek urgent medical attention if you experience chest pain or tightness that is severe or does not go away
  • Tell your doctor if you have risk factors for heart disease before starting this medicine

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Striptan used for?

It is used to treat acute migraine attacks with or without aura in adults; it does not prevent migraine and should not be used for other headache types.

How does this medicine work?

It stimulates serotonin receptors that constrict dilated brain blood vessels and reduce the release of pain-signalling substances involved in migraine.

When should I take this tablet?

As soon as possible after a migraine attack begins – it works best when taken early, though it can still help if taken later in the attack.

Can I take a second dose if the first one doesn’t work?

No, if the first dose does not relieve the migraine, taking a second dose for the same attack is unlikely to help – a second dose is only for a migraine that returns after initial improvement, and only after at least 2 hours.

What are the common side effects?

A tingling or warm sensation, tightness in the chest or throat, dizziness, and tiredness are commonly reported and are usually mild and short-lived.

Can this medicine be taken if I have heart disease?

No, sumatriptan is not recommended in people with a history of heart attack, angina, stroke, or uncontrolled high blood pressure, as it can cause blood vessel narrowing.

Can this be taken with antidepressants?

Combining sumatriptan with certain antidepressants (SSRIs or SNRIs) can rarely cause serotonin syndrome – tell your doctor about all antidepressants you are taking.
