Overview

Uphamol 120mg Syrup is an oral suspension containing 120mg of paracetamol (acetaminophen) per 5ml, formulated specifically for infants and young children. It belongs to the non-opioid analgesic and antipyretic drug class and is registered for over-the-counter sale in Malaysia. The syrup is supplied with a measuring device to allow accurate, weight- or age-based dosing for small children.

This lower-strength formulation is distinct from the higher-strength Uphamol tablets and suspensions intended for older children and adults. Paracetamol is one of the most extensively studied medicines used in paediatric care worldwide. Always use the measuring device provided with the bottle, as household spoons are not accurate enough for a child’s dose.

Directions for Use

Shake the bottle well before each use. Measure the dose accurately using the measuring device provided; do not use a household teaspoon. Can be given with or without food. Space each dose at least 4 to 6 hours apart.

Dosage

Dosing is generally based on the child’s weight, at approximately 10 to 15mg per kg of body weight per dose, given every 4 to 6 hours, up to a maximum of 4 doses in 24 hours, and not exceeding 60mg per kg in 24 hours. As a general age guide: infants 3 to 11 months, 2.5ml to 5ml; children 1 to 5 years, 5ml to 10ml, 3 to 4 times daily as needed. For infants under 3 months, use only on a doctor’s advice. Always confirm the exact dose with the pharmacist or the dosing chart on the packaging, and do not exceed the recommended frequency.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the bottle and carton. Discard any remaining syrup according to the period stated on the packaging once opened, if specified.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate or freeze unless the label specifically says to do so. Keep tightly closed and out of the reach and sight of children.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild nausea or stomach discomfort.
  • Common: Vomiting, particularly if given on an empty stomach.
  • Less common: Mild skin rash or itching in sensitive children.
  • Serious: Signs of liver problems (yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine) with overdose – seek urgent medical care.
  • Serious: Signs of a severe allergic reaction (facial swelling, difficulty breathing, widespread rash) – seek emergency care immediately.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to paracetamol or any ingredient in this syrup.
  • Severe hepatic (liver) impairment.
  • Infants below 3 months old, unless specifically directed by a doctor.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Do not give together with other medicines that already contain paracetamol, such as combination cold and cough products, to avoid exceeding the maximum daily dose.
  • Inform the pharmacist of any other medicines or supplements the child is taking before starting this syrup.
  • No clinically significant food interactions are known; the syrup may be given with or without food.

Quick Tips

  • Always use the measuring device provided, not a household spoon.
  • Shake the bottle well before every use.
  • Keep a simple written log of dose times to avoid double dosing, especially if more than one caregiver is involved.
  • Check the concentration (120mg/5ml) against any other paracetamol product before switching between them.
  • Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of children’s reach between uses.
  • Bring the bottle with you if you need to consult a doctor or pharmacist about your child’s fever.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the active ingredient in Uphamol 120mg Syrup, and how is it concentrated?

Uphamol 120mg Syrup contains 120mg of paracetamol (acetaminophen) per 5ml, along with sucrose, methyl paraben, propyl paraben, flavouring agents, and purified water.

Who should not be given Uphamol 120mg Syrup?

This syrup should not be given to infants under 3 months old without a doctor’s direction, or to any child with a known hypersensitivity to paracetamol or severe liver impairment.

What is the difference between Uphamol 120mg Syrup and higher-strength Uphamol suspensions?

Uphamol 120mg Syrup is a lower-strength formulation intended for infants and young children, while higher-strength suspensions (such as 250mg per 5ml) are intended for older children who require a larger dose per millilitre. Always use the strength specifically recommended for your child’s weight and age.

How should Uphamol 120mg Syrup be stored once opened?

Store the bottle below 30°C in a dry place away from direct sunlight, tightly closed, and out of the reach and sight of children. Do not refrigerate unless directed on the label.

What should I do if my child accidentally swallows more than the recommended dose?

Seek medical attention immediately, even if your child appears well, as a paracetamol overdose in children can cause serious, delayed liver damage that may not show symptoms right away.
