Xepa Cough-En Rx Linctus

Despite the word “Rx” in its product name, Xepa Cough-En Rx Linctus is sold at DoctorOnCall as a non-prescription (over-the-counter) medicine in Malaysia — the name reflects a legacy brand/SKU naming convention rather than a current prescription-only classification. It is a combination cough linctus containing diphenhydramine hydrochloride, a sedating antihistamine, together with ammonium chloride, an expectorant, from the same product family as Xepa Cough-En Linctus, typically supplied as a different concentration or pack-size variant.

The diphenhydramine component helps dry up secretions and reduce the urge to cough through its antihistamine and mild central cough-suppressant action, while ammonium chloride works as an expectorant to loosen and thin phlegm so it is easier to clear from the airway. Like other diphenhydramine-based cough products, Xepa Cough-En Rx Linctus can cause drowsiness, and it is commonly used for an allergic or irritating cough with some accompanying phlegm in adults and older children, following the directions on the product label.

Diphenhydramine blocks histamine H1 receptors and produces anticholinergic, drying and central sedating effects that reduce the cough reflex and dry up excess airway secretions, while ammonium chloride increases the water content of respiratory secretions as an expectorant, thinning mucus so it is easier to cough up and clear from the chest.
