Sunward Paedicof Syrup is a combination cough and cold syrup containing dexchlorpheniramine maleate (an antihistamine), dextromethorphan hydrobromide (a cough suppressant), and pseudoephedrine hydrochloride (a nasal decongestant). It is used for the short-term relief of dry cough, runny or blocked nose, sneezing, and other symptoms associated with the common cold, flu, or allergic conditions.
Each ingredient targets a different symptom: dexchlorpheniramine blocks histamine to reduce sneezing and a runny nose, dextromethorphan acts on the brain’s cough centre to reduce the urge to cough, and pseudoephedrine narrows swollen blood vessels in the nasal passages to relieve congestion.
Dexchlorpheniramine blocks H1 histamine receptors to reduce sneezing, itching, and nasal discharge; dextromethorphan suppresses the cough reflex by acting centrally on the brainstem’s cough centre; and pseudoephedrine stimulates alpha-adrenergic receptors in nasal blood vessels, causing them to constrict and reducing nasal swelling and congestion.
