Xepa Cough-En Linctus

Xepa Cough-En Linctus is a combination cough medicine containing diphenhydramine hydrochloride, a sedating antihistamine, together with ammonium chloride, an expectorant. It is a non-prescription linctus used for cough associated with allergies or colds — the diphenhydramine component helps dry up secretions and suppress the urge to cough through its antihistamine and mild central cough-suppressant action, while the ammonium chloride helps to loosen and thin mucus in the airway, making a productive (phlegmy) cough easier to clear.

This dual action makes Xepa Cough-En Linctus suitable for an irritating, allergy-related cough that also has some accompanying phlegm, rather than a purely dry, tickly cough or a heavily congested chesty cough alone. Like other diphenhydramine-containing products, it can cause drowsiness, so it is commonly taken in the evening or when sedation is not a concern, and it is sold in Malaysia without a doctor’s prescription for use in adults and older children according to the label directions.

Diphenhydramine blocks histamine H1 receptors and has anticholinergic, drying and central sedating effects that reduce the cough reflex and dry up excess nasal and airway secretions linked to allergy or a cold, while ammonium chloride acts as an expectorant, increasing the water content of respiratory secretions to make mucus less thick and easier to cough up and clear.

Take Xepa Cough-En Linctus by mouth using the measuring cup or spoon provided, shaking the bottle well beforehand, and space doses evenly through the day as directed on the label; because diphenhydramine can cause drowsiness, take extra care with the timing of doses if you need to drive or operate machinery afterward.

Dosing is age-based and should follow the directions on the product label or a pharmacist’s advice — adults and older children are generally given a higher dose than younger children, taken several times a day as needed for cough, up to the maximum stated on the packaging. This linctus is not generally recommended for very young children without a doctor’s or pharmacist’s specific advice, and the dose should not be increased beyond the label directions.

Use Xepa Cough-En Linctus before the expiry date printed on the bottle or carton, and discard any unused linctus after the in-use period stated on the label once opened.

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, keep the cap tightly closed between doses, and store out of the sight and reach of children.

• Known hypersensitivity to diphenhydramine, ammonium chloride, or other ingredients in the linctus
• Severe liver or kidney impairment (ammonium chloride is cleared via these organs) — seek medical advice first

• Alcohol and other sedating medicines — increased drowsiness
• Other antihistamine- or diphenhydramine-containing cold, flu, allergy, or sleep products — risk of double-dosing on the same active ingredient
• MAOI antidepressants — may intensify anticholinergic and sedative effects

• Check other cold, flu, allergy or sleep products you’re taking to avoid duplicating diphenhydramine
• Take care if you need to drive or operate machinery, as it can cause drowsiness
• Stay well hydrated to help the expectorant action loosen mucus
• Use the measuring cup or spoon provided for an accurate dose
• Avoid alcohol while taking this linctus
• See a doctor if the cough lasts more than a week, or is accompanied by fever, chest pain, or breathlessness

Precautions: This linctus can cause drowsiness — take care with driving, operating machinery, and consuming alcohol. Use with caution in people with asthma or chronic lung disease, glaucoma, urinary retention, or significant liver or kidney impairment, and check with a doctor or pharmacist before use in pregnancy, breastfeeding, or in young children.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: See a doctor or pharmacist if the cough persists beyond about a week, worsens, or is accompanied by fever, coloured or blood-stained phlegm, chest pain, or breathing difficulty, as these may indicate a condition needing further assessment.
