What is HIV and AIDS?

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that specifically attacks the human immune system, which is responsible for defending the body against any infection. The virus targets and weakens the immune cells in the body, ultimately leading to AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) if left untreated.

AIDS is the last stage of the HIV infection, where the immune system is severely damaged and cannot fight off infections, making the individual more vulnerable to fatal infections.

Signs of HIV and AIDS

  • Fever

Fever is a common symptom of many diseases, including viral and bacterial infections. However, it can also be an early symptom of HIV infection, usually occurring 2-4 weeks after infection.

  • Swollen Lymph Nodes

Lymph nodes protect the body from infection and disease and act as the body's immune system against infections like bacteria, viruses and cancer cells. The HIV attacks and damages T lymphocyte cells that help fight infections, leading to enlargement or swelling of lymph nodes in some parts of the body. This symptom is often experienced by people infected with HIV.

  • Muscle and Joint Pain

The HIV virus that attacks the body's immune system can cause muscle and joint pain. This symptom arises when the immune system is unable to protect the body from infections and disease, leading to pain in muscles and joints.

It also causes damage to nerves and bones, leading to further discomfort. This symptom is an early sign of HIV and requires medical attention.

  • Night Sweats

Night sweats refer to excessive sweating at night that can disrupt a person's quality of sleep. For those with HIV, these symptoms can be worse.

  • Nausea and Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting is one of the early signs of HIV infection. They may appear weeks or months after exposure to the HIV virus. However, not everyone who has HIV will have these symptoms. Therefore, it is vital to get a doctor's examination first.

  • Rash

A rash is a common symptom in individuals with HIV. It can occur anywhere on the body and may appear as small itchy bumps or red spots. HIV rash usually occurs in the early stages of infection and can also be a sign of more severe AIDS.

  • Cough

Coughing is a common early sign found in individuals infected with HIV. This happens when the body's immune system becomes weak and cannot fight other infections.

A cough can also be caused by other problems such as lung infections or respiratory system-related diseases. Therefore, it is important to undergo a doctor's examination to determine the true cause of the cough.

  • Weight Loss

HIV patients can also experience drastic weight loss. This happens when the body cannot absorb nutrients well and needs more energy to fight infection. Proper and nutritious food intake is crucial for individuals with HIV. Doctors and nutritionists can help plan a balanced and sufficient diet to meet the body's needs.

  • Sore Throat and Mouth Sore

Sore throat and mouth sore are common symptoms experienced by individuals infected with the HIV virus. They often appear in the early stages of infection and can indicate the presence of HIV infection.

These symptoms include pain or discomfort in the throat and mouth, including the tongue and gums. Individuals infected with HIV may also experience toothache and lesions in the mouth.

  • Fatigue

Fatigue caused by HIV is called "HIV Fatigue Syndrome" or "HIV-related fatigue". It is one of the early signs of HIV that patients commonly experience.

Chronic fatigue is a condition where the patient feels tired continuously for more than a month. This fatigue is usually accompanied by a lack of energy, inability to perform daily activities, decreased work performance, and fatigue that does not go away with adequate rest or sleep.

  •  Headache

Headache is a common symptom among people living with HIV. This can be caused by various factors such as high blood pressure, increased pressure in the brain, and side effects from medications.

The severity of these symptoms depends on the stage of the disease, lifestyle, and other factors that can affect the patient's health. Different types of headaches can be experienced, including migraines, tension headaches, and sinus headaches.

  • Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis, also known as seborrheic eczema, is one of the symptoms associated with HIV. It usually affects areas of oily skin such as the scalp, face, and upper body.

Although seborrheic dermatitis can affect anyone, it is more common in individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those living with HIV. When a person's immune system is compromised due to HIV, their skin becomes more sensitive and prone to fungal infections, which can lead to seborrheic dermatitis.

  • Constipation or Diarrhoea

These are common digestive problems experienced by many people. However, they can also be early signs of HIV infection. Constipation is a condition in which a person has difficulty defecating, while diarrhea causes frequent bowel movements and liquid stool.

In the case of HIV, these symptoms can occur in the early stages of infection. HIV can damage the digestive tract, causing digestive problems such as constipation or diarrhea.
