Overview

Aprovasc 150/5mg Tablet contains irbesartan 150mg combined with amlodipine 5mg, a fixed-dose combination of an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) and a calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), typically when a single medicine alone has not adequately controlled blood pressure.

Irbesartan blocks the action of angiotensin II, a hormone that narrows blood vessels, while amlodipine relaxes blood vessels by blocking calcium entry into vascular smooth muscle. Together, these two complementary actions lower blood pressure more than either medicine alone.

How it Works

Irbesartan selectively blocks the AT1 receptor, preventing angiotensin II from causing blood vessel narrowing and sodium retention. Amlodipine blocks L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle cells, reducing calcium influx and causing the blood vessels to relax and widen. The combined effect produces a greater and more consistent reduction in blood pressure.

Directions for Use

Take Aprovasc 150/5mg Tablet at the same time every day, with or without food, swallowing the tablet whole with water. Continue taking it even if your blood pressure normalises, and do not stop suddenly without consulting your doctor, as blood pressure control needs to be continuous.

Dosage

The usual dose of Aprovasc 150/5mg Tablet is one tablet once daily. Your doctor will determine the appropriate strength (150mg irbesartan / 5mg amlodipine) based on your blood pressure response and tolerability, often after monotherapy with either component alone has not achieved your target blood pressure.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Aprovasc 150/5mg Tablet used for?

Aprovasc 150/5mg Tablet is a combination medicine used to treat high blood pressure, usually when a single blood pressure medicine has not been enough to control it on its own.

Why does this tablet combine two different blood pressure medicines?

Irbesartan and amlodipine lower blood pressure through different, complementary mechanisms. Combining them in one tablet often controls blood pressure more effectively than either medicine alone, while keeping to a simple once-daily dose.

Can I stop taking this medicine once my blood pressure is normal?

No, do not stop without consulting your doctor. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, and stopping suddenly can cause it to rise again.

Why do my ankles sometimes swell with this medicine?

Ankle or leg swelling is a recognised side effect of the amlodipine component. It is usually not serious, but let your doctor know if the swelling is significant or bothersome.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Aprovasc 150/5mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
