Overview

Arava 20mg Tablet is a prescription-only medicine (POM) presented as a tablet, with Leflunomide 20mg as its active ingredient content.

This page is limited to product, safety and handling information, in line with Malaysian rules on prescription medicine information for the public. Your prescriber or pharmacist is the right source for anything beyond that, together with the leaflet inside the pack.

Through DoctorOnCall, this product is supplied after an online consultation with a licensed doctor and a valid prescription, and it is checked by a registered pharmacist before dispensing. Take it exactly as prescribed, and speak to your doctor before stopping, changing the dose, or starting any other medicine alongside it.

Directions for Use

Take Arava 20mg Tablet at the same time each day, with or without food, swallowing the tablet whole. Do not stop or change your dose without consulting your rheumatologist. Because leflunomide has a very long half-life, an accelerated elimination procedure (using cholestyramine or activated charcoal) may be needed if treatment must be stopped, especially before planning a pregnancy – this must only be done under medical supervision.

Dosage

The usual maintenance dose of Arava 20mg Tablet is 10-20mg once daily as directed by your rheumatologist. A loading dose may be used at the very start of treatment in some cases, but only under specialist supervision. Regular monitoring of liver function, full blood count, and blood pressure is required throughout treatment.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Nausea or upset stomach
  • Diarrhoea
  • Headache
  • Hair thinning or hair loss
  • Elevated liver enzymes
  • Skin rash
  • Loss of appetite

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to leflunomide
  • Pregnancy, and women or men not using reliable contraception, due to the teratogenic risk
  • Severe hepatic impairment
  • Severe immunodeficiency or significant bone marrow suppression/anaemia
  • Severe uncontrolled infection

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Methotrexate combined with leflunomide increases the risk of liver toxicity
  • Live vaccines should be avoided during treatment
  • Warfarin’s anticoagulant effect may be increased, requiring closer INR monitoring
  • Rifampicin can increase leflunomide’s active metabolite levels
  • Cholestyramine or activated charcoal is used deliberately for the washout procedure, but otherwise reduces leflunomide levels if taken together

Quick Tips

  • Attend every scheduled liver function test, full blood count, and blood pressure check
  • Use effective contraception throughout treatment and discuss the washout procedure with your doctor well before trying to conceive
  • Report any signs of infection to your doctor promptly
