Overview

Dextrophan 15mg Syrup is an Over-the-Counter (OTC) oral syrup containing dextromethorphan hydrobromide, equivalent to 15mg per 5ml, as its active ingredient. It is sold through DoctorOnCall, a licensed online pharmacy serving customers in Malaysia and Singapore.

Dextromethorphan belongs to the class of centrally-acting antitussive agents used in oral liquid form, and Dextrophan Syrup is supplied as a flavoured liquid intended to be measured and taken by mouth. The syrup formulation is distinct from lozenge- or tablet-based dextromethorphan products, offering flexible dosing by volume.

Dextrophan 15mg Syrup is supplied in a 90ml bottle and is formulated for use in both adults and children, with dosing that varies by age group. It should be shaken before use to ensure the active ingredient is evenly distributed throughout the liquid.

Directions for Use

  • Shake the bottle well before each use.
  • Measure the dose using the measuring cup or spoon provided, rather than an ordinary household spoon.
  • Take by mouth, preferably after meals.
  • Do not exceed the maximum dose stated for your age group within a 24-hour period.

Dosage

Adults and children over 12 years: 10ml every 4 to 6 hours, up to a maximum of 60ml in 24 hours. Children aged 6 to 12 years: dosing should follow the printed pack insert or the guidance of a doctor or pharmacist, as pediatric dosing bands vary by age and body weight and should not be extrapolated from the adult dose. This product is generally not recommended for children under 6 years without medical advice. If a dose is missed, take it when remembered unless the next dose is nearly due, in which case skip the missed dose rather than doubling up. Self-treatment should not continue beyond 5 to 7 days; if symptoms persist, worsen, or are accompanied by high fever, chest pain, or shortness of breath, stop self-treatment and see a doctor.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use, and keep out of reach and sight of children.

  • Drowsiness or dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Stomach discomfort
  • Mild confusion (especially at high doses)
  • Dry mouth

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to dextromethorphan or any excipient in the formulation.

  • Chronic cough associated with smoking, asthma, or excessive bronchial secretions, unless directed by a doctor.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • May interact with certain antidepressants (such as SSRIs) and other serotonergic medicines; check with a pharmacist or doctor before combining.
  • Avoid taking together with other cough and cold products containing dextromethorphan, to prevent inadvertently exceeding the maximum daily dose.
  • No significant food interactions are established; taking after meals may help reduce mild stomach discomfort.

Quick Tips

  • Always use the measuring cup or spoon supplied with the syrup for an accurate dose.
  • Shake the bottle before every use.
  • Check any other cough, cold, or flu products you are taking for duplicate dextromethorphan content.
  • Keep a note of the time of each dose to avoid taking doses too close together.
  • Store the bottle upright and tightly closed between uses.
  • Keep the syrup out of reach of young children, as accidental overdose can be serious.
