Fosamax Plus 70mg/5600IU Tablet (New)

Fosamax Plus 70mg/5600IU Tablet (New) contains alendronate sodium 70mg and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) 5600IU (MSD), a once-weekly combination tablet used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, helping to increase bone density and reduce the risk of fractures, including of the hip and spine.

Alendronate is a bisphosphonate that binds to bone surfaces and slows the activity of osteoclasts, the cells that break down bone, allowing bone-building to outpace bone loss over time. Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) supports the body’s absorption of calcium and helps maintain healthy bone mineralisation alongside alendronate’s effect.

Alendronate accumulates in bone tissue and inhibits osteoclasts, the cells responsible for resorbing (breaking down) old bone. By slowing this process, bone density can increase over time as normal bone formation continues. Cholecalciferol is converted in the body to its active form, which increases calcium absorption from the gut, ensuring adequate calcium is available to support bone mineralisation during treatment.

Take Fosamax Plus 70mg/5600IU Tablet (New) first thing in the morning, at least 30 minutes before the first food, drink (other than plain water), or other medicine of the day, swallowed whole with a full glass of plain water only – not mineral water, coffee, tea, juice, or milk. After swallowing the tablet, remain fully upright (sitting or standing) for at least 30 minutes and until after you have eaten your first food of the day. Do not lie down during this time, as this reduces the risk of the tablet irritating or damaging the oesophagus (food pipe).

The usual dose of Fosamax Plus 70mg/5600IU Tablet (New) is one tablet once weekly, on the same day each week, exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take an extra tablet to make up for a missed dose – if you miss your usual day, take one tablet the morning after you remember, then return to your original weekly schedule.

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

• Known hypersensitivity to alendronate, cholecalciferol, or any ingredient in this product
• Abnormalities of the oesophagus that delay emptying, such as stricture or achalasia
• Inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes
• Low blood calcium (hypocalcaemia), which must be corrected before starting treatment
• Severe kidney impairment

• Calcium supplements, antacids, and other oral medicines can significantly reduce alendronate absorption if taken too close together – space them at least 30 minutes apart
• NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen, aspirin) may increase the risk of stomach or oesophageal irritation when combined with alendronate
• Food and beverages other than plain water (including mineral water, coffee, juice, and milk) markedly reduce alendronate absorption if taken with or soon after the dose
• Other bisphosphonates should not be used at the same time as this product

• Take your tablet first thing in the morning with a full glass of plain water only
• Remain upright for at least 30 minutes and until after your first meal – do not lie back down
• Mark the same day each week to help you remember your weekly dose
• Tell your dentist you are taking this medicine before any dental surgery or extraction
• Report any unusual thigh, hip, or groin pain to your doctor promptly
• Ensure you get enough dietary calcium as advised by your doctor, alongside this medicine
