Overview

Glevo 500mg Tablet contains levofloxacin 500mg, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, urinary tract infections and pyelonephritis, and certain skin and soft tissue infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

Levofloxacin works by blocking enzymes that bacteria need to copy and repair their DNA, which stops the bacteria from multiplying and leads to bacterial cell death. It does not work against infections caused by viruses, such as the common cold or flu.

How it Works

Levofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, two enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair. By blocking these enzymes, levofloxacin prevents the bacteria from dividing and ultimately causes bacterial cell death, making it a bactericidal antibiotic effective against a broad range of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms.

Directions for Use

Take Glevo 500mg Tablet at the same time each day with a full glass of water, with or without food. Avoid taking it at the same time as antacids, calcium, iron, zinc, or magnesium-containing products, as these can reduce absorption of the medicine – space these apart by at least 2 hours before or after your dose. Complete the full prescribed course even if you start to feel better.

Dosage

The usual dose of Glevo 500mg Tablet is 500mg once daily, though your doctor may prescribe a different dose or frequency depending on the type and severity of your infection and your kidney function. The full course, typically 7-14 days, must be completed exactly as prescribed even if symptoms improve earlier, to fully clear the infection and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Antacids, and calcium, iron, zinc, or magnesium supplements, reduce absorption of levofloxacin if taken together – space doses at least 2 hours apart
  • NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen) may increase the risk of central nervous system effects, including seizures
  • Warfarin’s blood-thinning effect may be enhanced, requiring closer monitoring of clotting tests
  • Corticosteroids taken together with levofloxacin increase the risk of tendon inflammation or rupture, especially in older adults

Quick Tips

  • Complete the full course of antibiotics even if you feel better before finishing it
  • Stay well hydrated throughout treatment
  • Use sun protection, as this medicine can increase sensitivity to sunlight
  • Stop the medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you develop tendon pain, muscle weakness, or numbness/tingling

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Glevo 500mg Tablet used for?

Glevo 500mg Tablet is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia, sinusitis, bronchitis flare-ups, urinary tract infections, and certain skin infections. Your doctor will confirm the specific infection it has been prescribed for.

Why must I finish the full course even if I feel better?

Stopping early can leave some bacteria alive, allowing the infection to return and increasing the risk that the bacteria become resistant to the antibiotic in future.

Can I take this medicine with milk or calcium supplements?

Dairy products and calcium, iron, zinc, or magnesium supplements can reduce how much levofloxacin your body absorbs. Take this medicine at least 2 hours before or after such products.

Why do I need to be careful about tendon pain with this medicine?

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics like levofloxacin carry a recognised risk of tendon inflammation and, rarely, tendon rupture, particularly in older adults or those also taking corticosteroids. Stop the medicine and seek medical advice promptly if you notice tendon pain or swelling.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Glevo 500mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose, and do not stop the course without your doctor’s advice.
