Hovid Paraffin Liquid

Hovid Paraffin Liquid is an oral liquid preparation manufactured by Hovid Berhad, a Malaysian pharmaceutical company. Its sole active ingredient is Liquid Paraffin BP, a purified mineral oil, supplied as a 100mL bottle of oral liquid. Liquid Paraffin is classed pharmacologically as a lubricant laxative, a well-established category of oral liquid medicine.

This product is an Over-the-Counter (OTC) oral liquid and does not require a prescription. It has an oily, viscous consistency typical of mineral oil preparations, and is taken by mouth using a measuring cup or spoon rather than poured freely. Shake the bottle well before use.

Measure the dose using the measuring cup or spoon provided; do not use an ordinary household spoon, as this can result in an inaccurate dose.

Take the measured dose by mouth, typically at bedtime, or as directed by a doctor or pharmacist.

Do not take this product immediately before lying down, and avoid taking it together with meals, as this may increase the risk of the oil being inhaled into the airway (aspiration), particularly in older adults or anyone with swallowing difficulties.

The typical adult dose is 10mL to 30mL taken by mouth once daily, usually at bedtime, or as directed by a doctor or pharmacist.

Use in children should only be under the guidance of a doctor or pharmacist, as this product is not generally recommended for young children without medical advice, due to the risk of aspiration.

Do not use continuously for longer than one week without medical advice, as prolonged use may affect the body’s absorption of certain fat-soluble vitamins.

If there is no bowel movement within 6 to 8 hours of a bedtime dose, or if symptoms persist beyond a few days, stop self-treating and seek medical advice.

Use this product before the expiry date printed on the bottle and outer carton.

Once opened, use within the timeframe stated on the packaging, if printed; otherwise, discard any remaining liquid after the printed expiry date or if the appearance, colour, or smell of the liquid changes.

• Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and heat.
• Keep the bottle tightly capped when not in use.

• Do not use in individuals with known hypersensitivity to liquid paraffin or mineral oil.
• Do not use in individuals with swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), or who are bedridden, due to the increased risk of aspiration into the lungs.
• Do not use in infants and young children without specific medical advice.
• Do not use in individuals with symptoms of appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, or undiagnosed abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting — seek medical assessment instead.
• Not for prolonged, continuous use without medical supervision, due to the risk of reduced absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

• Liquid Paraffin may reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (Vitamin A, D, E, and K) and other fat-soluble medicines if taken at the same time — where possible, take other oral medicines at a different time of day from this product.
• Prolonged or regular use together with stool softeners containing docusate sodium may theoretically increase systemic absorption of the mineral oil — check with a pharmacist if you are using both products.
• Taking this product together with meals or immediately before lying down may increase the risk of the oil being inhaled into the airway — take it away from mealtimes and remain upright for a period afterward.
• No significant interactions with common food and beverages are established beyond the timing precaution above.
