Overview

Hovid Virest 5% Cream contains Aciclovir 5% cream and is available as a cream. It is classified as a prescription medicine and may only be obtained with a valid prescription from a registered medical practitioner.

Only product, safety and handling information is published here. Anything beyond that is explained to you directly by your doctor or pharmacist as part of your consultation.

DoctorOnCall is a licensed online pharmacy. Orders for Hovid Virest 5% Cream are processed only after a doctor has assessed your suitability and issued a prescription, and every order is checked by a registered pharmacist before it is sent out.

Directions for Use

Wash your hands before and after applying Hovid Virest 5% Cream. Apply a thin layer of cream to cover the cold sore and the surrounding area, starting as soon as you notice the earliest tingling, itching, or redness – treatment is most effective when started at this early stage rather than once blisters have fully formed. Do not apply inside the mouth, in the eyes, or on genital skin.

Dosage

Hovid Virest 5% Cream is usually applied to the affected area approximately 5 times a day, at roughly 4-hour intervals (skipping the overnight gap), for the number of days advised by your doctor or as stated in the product information – typically around 4-5 days, continuing for a couple of days after the sore has healed if advised.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhoea
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Fatigue or tiredness
  • Mild rash or skin reaction

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to aciclovir, valaciclovir, or any ingredient in this cream
  • Not for use inside the mouth, in the eyes, or on genital or other mucous membrane surfaces unless specifically directed by your doctor

Drug / Food Interactions

  • This cream has minimal systemic absorption, so significant drug interactions are unlikely
  • Avoid applying other topical creams or cosmetics to the same area at the same time, as this may affect absorption or increase irritation
  • The cream does not reliably prevent transmission of the virus to others – avoid close contact (e.g. kissing) with the affected area while the cold sore is active

Quick Tips

  • Apply at the very first tingling or itching sensation for the best result
  • Wash your hands before and after each application to avoid spreading the virus
  • Do not share lip balm, cups, cutlery, or towels while a cold sore is active
  • Avoid applying near the eyes or on broken/open skin unless your doctor advises
  • Continue the full recommended course even if the sore appears to be healing sooner
  • See your doctor if cold sores are frequent, severe, or not improving after several days of treatment

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Aciclovir 5% cream
