Overview

Moo Milk Calcium Plus Tablet is a chewable calcium supplement that provides calcium together with vitamin D3, magnesium and zinc in a milk-based tablet that also contains milk powder. It comes in a pack of 60 chewable tablets and is intended to be chewed thoroughly before swallowing, which can be convenient for children and adults who prefer not to swallow large tablets. The exact amount of each nutrient per tablet, and the specific source of calcium used, should be checked on the product label.

Calcium is the main mineral in bones and teeth, and it is also needed for normal muscle function, nerve signalling and blood clotting. Vitamin D3 contributes to the normal absorption and use of calcium from the diet, while magnesium and zinc are essential minerals involved in many enzyme processes, including those that support normal bone metabolism. Together, these nutrients make the tablet a combined source for people whose diet may not provide enough calcium, such as children and teenagers who drink little milk or adults with a low intake of dairy foods.

The tablet is designed for both growing children and adults, with different daily serving amounts for each group. As it contains milk powder, it is not suitable for people with a milk allergy and may not suit those who are sensitive to lactose. Calcium supplements are best viewed as a way to top up dietary intake rather than a replacement for a balanced diet that includes calcium-rich foods.

Directions for Use

Chew the tablet thoroughly before swallowing; do not swallow it whole. It is best taken after a meal, as calcium is generally better tolerated and absorbed with food, and it may be followed with a drink of water.

Young children should take the tablet under adult supervision to make sure it is chewed properly. If you are taking other medicines that interact with calcium, such as certain antibiotics or thyroid medicine, space them apart as advised by your doctor or pharmacist.

Dosage

Children: 1 tablet daily. Adults: 1 to 2 tablets daily. Alternatively, take as advised by your doctor or pharmacist, and follow the age guidance and serving instructions printed on the product label.

Do not exceed the recommended daily serving. If you are also taking other calcium, vitamin D, magnesium or zinc products, or consuming several fortified foods and drinks, check your total daily intake with a pharmacist to avoid taking more than you need.

Storage Instructions

  • Store in a cool, dry place below the temperature stated on the label, away from direct sunlight, heat and humidity. Keep the container tightly closed after each use to protect the chewable tablets from moisture.
  • Keep out of reach of children, as the pleasant taste of chewable tablets may encourage children to take more than the recommended amount.

Side Effects

  • Common: Bloating, wind or a mild feeling of fullness.
  • Common: Constipation, particularly with higher intakes of calcium.
  • Common: A chalky taste in the mouth after chewing.
  • Uncommon: Stomach discomfort or loose stools in people sensitive to lactose, because the tablet contains milk powder.
  • Serious: Allergic reactions in people allergic to milk protein, such as rash, swelling of the lips or face, or difficulty breathing; stop use and seek medical help immediately.
  • Serious (excessive intake): Very high calcium and vitamin D intake over time may raise blood calcium or the risk of kidney stones, with symptoms such as nausea, excessive thirst, frequent urination or confusion.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to cow’s milk protein or to any ingredient in the tablet.
  • High blood calcium levels (hypercalcaemia) or conditions that cause excess calcium in the urine, unless a doctor advises otherwise.
  • Not recommended for people who have been told to limit calcium or vitamin D intake, such as some people with kidney stones or kidney disease, without medical advice.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics (e.g. doxycycline, ciprofloxacin): calcium, magnesium and zinc can reduce their absorption; take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or several hours after this tablet, as advised by your pharmacist.
  • Levothyroxine: calcium can reduce its absorption; separate the doses by about 4 hours.
  • Bisphosphonates (e.g. alendronate): calcium reduces their absorption; take them on an empty stomach as directed and take calcium later in the day.
  • Thiazide diuretics: may reduce calcium excretion and increase the chance of high blood calcium when combined with calcium and vitamin D.
  • Iron supplements: calcium can reduce iron absorption, so take them at different times of the day.
  • Other vitamin D or calcium products, including active vitamin D medicines such as alfacalcidol or calcitriol: adding this tablet increases total intake; check with your doctor first.
  • Food: very high-fibre or high-oxalate foods (such as spinach) may slightly reduce calcium absorption from the same meal.

Quick Tips

  • Chew the tablet completely, especially when giving it to children.
  • Take it after a meal to improve comfort and absorption.
  • Count calcium from milk, yoghurt, cheese, tofu and fortified drinks when judging how much extra calcium you need.
  • Space this tablet away from antibiotics, thyroid medicine and iron supplements.
  • Drink enough water and include fibre in your diet if you notice constipation.
  • Check with a doctor or pharmacist before giving it to a child under the age stated on the label.
