Overview

Oestrogel 0.06% Topical Gel is supplied as a gel, with Estradiol 0.06% w/w. It is supplied in pack sizes of 80g and 80g x3.

No prescription is required for this product, as it is a non-prescription medicine. This page is limited to product, safety and handling information.

If you would like guidance before buying, you can speak to a doctor or pharmacist through an online consultation on DoctorOnCall. Orders are dispensed by a registered pharmacist and delivered to your address.

Directions for Use

Apply the gel to clean, dry, unbroken skin, typically on the arms, shoulders or inner thighs, as instructed by your doctor, spreading it over a slightly larger area than a standard hand-sized area and allowing it to dry fully before dressing. Rotate the application site as advised to reduce skin irritation, and avoid applying to the breasts or genital area unless specifically instructed. Wash your hands after application unless they are the application site, and avoid showering, swimming or applying sunscreen over the area for at least an hour after application, or as your doctor advises, so the gel has time to absorb.

Dosage

The dose is individualised by your doctor based on your menopausal symptoms, medical history and response to treatment, usually starting with the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration needed to control symptoms, with periodic review to reassess ongoing need. Do not increase or decrease the amount of gel applied, or the frequency, without your doctor’s advice, and attend follow-up reviews as scheduled, especially if you still have a uterus, as additional progestogen therapy may be needed to protect the womb lining.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30 degrees Celsius, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat, with the tube cap or pump closed tightly between uses. Keep out of reach and sight of children, and avoid contact between the application site and other household members, particularly children and pregnant women, until the gel has fully dried.

Side Effects

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Breast tenderness or swelling
  • Headache or migraine
  • Bloating
  • Mood changes
  • Spotting or breakthrough bleeding
  • Increased risk of blood clots with long-term use

Contraindications

  • Known, suspected, or history of breast cancer or other oestrogen-dependent cancer
  • Undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Current or history of venous thromboembolism (blood clots in the legs or lungs)

  • Active liver disease or a history of liver disease with abnormal liver function that has not returned to normal
  • Known allergy to estradiol or any ingredient in the gel
  • Pregnancy or suspected pregnancy, and breastfeeding

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Certain medicines that affect liver enzymes, such as some anti-seizure medicines, rifampicin, and St John’s Wort, may reduce the effectiveness of oestrogen therapy
  • May affect blood sugar control in people with diabetes, sometimes requiring adjustment of diabetes medicines
  • Can interact with blood-thinning medicines and change clotting risk; discuss all medicines with your doctor
  • Should not be applied at the same time or site as other topical medicines without checking with your doctor, as this may affect absorption
  • Inform your doctor of all other hormone-containing products, supplements, or herbal remedies you use

Quick Tips

  • Apply the gel at the same time each day to a clean, dry area of skin, and let it dry fully before dressing
  • Rotate the application site as advised and avoid the breasts or genital area unless your doctor instructs otherwise
  • Attend scheduled follow-up appointments so your doctor can review your ongoing need for HRT and any risk factors
  • Seek prompt medical attention for leg pain or swelling, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, or unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • If you have a uterus, ask your doctor whether you also need a progestogen to protect the womb lining
  • Do not let others come into skin contact with the freshly applied gel, especially children and pregnant women

Relevant Information

Hormone replacement therapy such as Oestrogel can meaningfully improve quality of life for women experiencing troublesome menopausal symptoms, and the transdermal gel route is often chosen because it may carry a different risk profile for blood clots compared with oral oestrogen tablets in some patients. However, HRT is not appropriate for everyone, and a doctor’s individual assessment of your personal and family medical history, including cancer, clotting and cardiovascular risk factors, is essential before starting and during ongoing treatment. Customers in Malaysia and Singapore should use DoctorOnCall’s online consultation service to determine suitability and should have regular medical review, including consideration of periodic breast and gynaecological screening as advised by their doctor.
