Janumet 50/500mg Tablet is a fixed-dose combination tablet containing sitagliptin 50mg and metformin 500mg, used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Sitagliptin and metformin lower blood sugar through complementary mechanisms: sitagliptin (a DPP-4 inhibitor) increases the body’s own insulin release after meals and reduces excess sugar production by the liver, while metformin reduces the liver’s glucose output and improves the body’s sensitivity to insulin.
Sitagliptin inhibits the DPP-4 enzyme, prolonging the action of incretin hormones that stimulate insulin release from the pancreas in response to meals and suppress glucagon secretion. Metformin decreases hepatic glucose production, reduces intestinal glucose absorption, and improves peripheral insulin sensitivity. Together they provide complementary blood-sugar-lowering effects.
Take Janumet 50/500mg Tablet with meals (usually morning and evening) to reduce the stomach-related side effects associated with metformin. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew it. Continue your prescribed diet and exercise plan alongside this medicine.
Janumet 50/500mg Tablet is usually taken twice daily with meals, at a dose determined by your doctor based on your current diabetes treatment, blood sugar control, and kidney function. Do not adjust your dose without consulting your doctor, as both underdosing and overdosing can affect your blood sugar control.
Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.
Janumet 50/500mg Tablet is used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes.
Sitagliptin and metformin lower blood sugar through different, complementary mechanisms, so combining them in one tablet often provides better blood sugar control than either medicine alone, while simplifying your dosing routine.
Taking it with meals significantly reduces the stomach-related side effects (such as nausea and diarrhoea) commonly associated with metformin.
Your doctor may advise temporarily stopping metformin-containing medicines before and after certain imaging procedures that use iodinated contrast dye, due to a rare risk to kidney function. Always inform your doctor and radiographer that you are taking this medicine.
Take the missed dose with your next meal as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue as normal. Do not double the dose.
