Overview

Mucoprom Syrup is a syrup with Promethazine Hydrochloride declared as its active content. It is supplied in a pack size of 120ml.

This is a non-prescription product and can be purchased without a prescription. Only product, safety and handling details are published on this page.

An online consultation with a DoctorOnCall doctor or pharmacist is available for this product, and a registered pharmacist reviews each order before dispatch to Malaysia or Singapore. Follow the directions on the label and on the leaflet inside the pack.

Directions for Use

Shake the bottle well before each use and measure the dose using the measuring cup or spoon provided rather than an ordinary household spoon. Mucoprom Syrup may be taken with or without food, and because it commonly causes drowsiness, it is often best taken in the evening or before bedtime unless your pharmacist or doctor advises otherwise; avoid alcohol and do not drive or operate machinery until you know how the syrup affects you.

Dosage

Dosing is based on age and should follow the product label or your pharmacist’s or doctor’s advice, as promethazine syrup is generally not recommended for children under 2 years of age due to the risk of severe breathing problems. Adults and older children are typically given a measured dose every 4 to 6 hours as needed, without exceeding the maximum daily amount stated on the packaging, and the lowest effective dose should be used for the shortest time needed to control symptoms.

Shelf Life

Mucoprom Syrup remains effective until the expiry date printed on the bottle and carton when stored correctly and unopened. Once opened, check the label or ask your pharmacist for the recommended in-use period, and discard any syrup that has changed in colour, smell, or consistency even if the printed expiry date has not yet passed.

Storage Instructions

Store Mucoprom Syrup below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture, and keep the bottle tightly closed after use. Do not refrigerate or freeze unless the label specifically states otherwise, and keep the syrup out of reach and sight of children at all times.

Side Effects

  • Drowsiness or dizziness

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to promethazine or other phenothiazine-type medicines

  • Severe liver disease
  • Use together with other strong sedating medicines or alcohol without medical advice

Relevant Information

Mucoprom Syrup is sold as a non-prescription pharmacy medicine in Malaysia for short-term relief of dry cough and allergy-related symptoms, but because promethazine causes significant sedation and is not suitable for very young children, it is advisable to check with a pharmacist before giving it to children, the elderly, or anyone already taking other sedating medicines.
