Trachisan (Lidocaine) 8mg Lozenges

Trachisan (Lidocaine) 8mg Lozenges combine three active ingredients: tyrothricin, an antibacterial that acts against bacteria commonly involved in throat and mouth infections; chlorhexidine, an antiseptic that helps reduce germs in the mouth and throat; and lidocaine, a local anaesthetic that provides fast, temporary numbing to ease pain. Together, these lozenges are commonly used for the symptomatic relief of sore throat, minor throat infections, and painful inflammation of the mouth and throat such as pharyngitis and mild tonsillitis.

Trachisan Lozenges are available over the counter in Malaysia for short-term use and are dissolved slowly in the mouth to allow the ingredients to act locally on the throat and mouth lining. They are intended for temporary symptom relief rather than treatment of the underlying cause of an infection, so a doctor should be consulted if sore throat is severe, lasts more than a few days, or is accompanied by high fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or a rash.

Tyrothricin works by disrupting the cell membranes of susceptible bacteria, helping to limit bacterial growth in the throat and mouth, while chlorhexidine acts as a broad-spectrum antiseptic that reduces the overall microbial load in the oral cavity. Lidocaine, a local anaesthetic, temporarily blocks nerve signal transmission in the mouth and throat lining, producing a numbing effect that reduces the sensation of pain and discomfort from swallowing or throat irritation within minutes of the lozenge dissolving.

Allow one lozenge to dissolve slowly in the mouth, without chewing or swallowing it whole, and avoid eating or drinking immediately afterwards so the medicine has time to act on the throat and mouth lining. Because lidocaine causes numbing, take care when eating or drinking hot food or beverages shortly after use, to avoid accidentally biting the numbed area of the mouth or tongue.

For adults and children as labelled, one lozenge is typically dissolved in the mouth every 2 to 3 hours as needed for throat pain, up to a maximum stated on the packaging, usually not exceeding around 6 lozenges in 24 hours. Do not use continuously for more than a few days without consulting a doctor or pharmacist, particularly if symptoms are not improving.

Trachisan (Lidocaine) 8mg Lozenges are generally stable for up to 2 to 3 years from the date of manufacture when unopened and stored correctly; always check the expiry date printed on the blister strip and outer packaging and do not use beyond this date.

Store Trachisan Lozenges below 25°C to 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the lozenges in their original blister packaging until use, and keep out of reach and sight of children.

• Known hypersensitivity to tyrothricin, chlorhexidine, lidocaine, or any other ingredient in the lozenges
• Known allergy to local anaesthetics of the amide type (such as lidocaine)
• Children below the age recommended on the packaging, due to choking risk and dosing considerations
• Severe or worsening throat infection with high fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, which needs prompt medical assessment rather than symptomatic lozenges alone
• Open wounds or ulcers in the mouth that have not been assessed by a doctor or dentist

• Avoid eating or drinking immediately after use, as this can wash away the medicine before it takes full effect and increases the risk of biting numbed tissue
• Concurrent use of other oral local anaesthetic products or throat sprays containing lidocaine may increase the total anaesthetic dose absorbed and should be avoided unless advised by a doctor
• Chlorhexidine-containing lozenges may temporarily affect taste perception or stain teeth with frequent, prolonged use
• Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are using other throat or mouth medicines at the same time

• Let the lozenge dissolve slowly in the mouth rather than chewing or swallowing it whole
• Avoid hot drinks or food shortly after use, as the numbing effect can mask accidental burns or bites
• Do not exceed the maximum number of lozenges stated on the packaging within 24 hours
• Use for short-term relief only; see a doctor if sore throat lasts more than a few days or is severe
• Seek urgent medical care if you notice swelling of the mouth, throat or face, or difficulty breathing
• Keep out of reach of young children due to choking risk

Trachisan Lozenges provide temporary, symptomatic relief for a sore or painful throat but do not replace medical treatment for infections that may require antibiotics or further assessment, particularly in cases of streptococcal throat infection, tonsillitis with pus, or symptoms lasting beyond a few days. Anyone with recurrent or frequent throat infections, or difficulty swallowing that does not improve, should see a doctor rather than relying on repeated lozenge use for ongoing symptoms.
