Overview

Xyloproct Ointment is a combination product containing lidocaine (a local anaesthetic), hydrocortisone acetate (a corticosteroid), aluminium subacetate, and zinc oxide, used to relieve pain, itching, and inflammation associated with haemorrhoids (piles) and other anorectal conditions.

Together, these ingredients numb the affected area, reduce local inflammation and swelling, and provide a protective, soothing effect on irritated skin and tissue around the anus.

How it Works

Lidocaine blocks nerve signals in the treated area, providing temporary numbness and pain relief. Hydrocortisone acetate reduces local inflammation, swelling, and itching. Aluminium subacetate and zinc oxide have astringent and protective properties that help soothe irritated tissue.

Directions for Use

Clean and dry the affected area gently before applying. Use the applicator provided for internal application if directed, or apply directly to external haemorrhoids with clean hands or a clean applicator.

Dosage

Apply a small amount of ointment to the affected area two to three times daily, or after each bowel movement, or as directed by your doctor, usually for a short course.

Shelf Life

Refer to the expiry date printed on the packaging.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Mild burning or stinging at the application site
  • Redness or swelling of the skin
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Numbness in surrounding areas
  • Allergic reactions such as rash or itching (rare)

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to lidocaine, hydrocortisone, or any other ingredient
  • Untreated local bacterial, viral, or fungal infection of the anorectal area
  • Not intended for long-term continuous use without medical review

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No significant systemic drug interactions are expected with short-term, correctly applied use, as absorption into the bloodstream is minimal.
  • Avoid combining with other topical anorectal products unless directed by your doctor, to prevent excessive steroid or anaesthetic exposure.
  • Inform your doctor if you are using other rectal or topical medicines.

Quick Tips

  • Use only for the short course recommended by your doctor – prolonged use of the steroid component can thin the skin.
  • Maintain a high-fibre diet and adequate fluid intake to help reduce straining, which can worsen haemorrhoids.
  • See your doctor if symptoms do not improve after a week, or if you notice rectal bleeding, as this needs further assessment.
  • Wash your hands before and after application.
