Severe menstrual cramps

Hello dr, I’m 22 y/o. Currently I’m menstruating, it is my first day. I am having severe period cramp to the extent I felt light headed and almost passed out. I usually take Ponstan to relieve my pain as I always experience very painful cramps that sometimes affects my back and legs. I took Ponstan in the afternoon but my cramps started again now and I felt super light headed in the bathroom and difficulty in breathing so I had to run back to my room, turn on the air cond and just lay on the bed face down. I am not sure as to why I am experiencing cramps so severe like this. Do I need to start taking iron tablets/vitamins to help with the oxygen flow? Or is this normal to experience during periods?

Hello, and thank you for contacting us

Notably, for many females, period pain & menstrual cramps can be slightly more severe than the other.

However, you should definitely report to your health care professional if you have any of those conditions:

  • medications such as NSAIDs and self-care steps does not help
  • the period pain interferes with your daily routine
  • the cramps suddenly get worse
  • develops a fever along with your period pain
  • you still have the menstrual pain even when you are not getting your period

To know further with regards to your condition, or to be able to decide on which therapy best suited for your condition, additional assessment must be done. With that being said we encourage you to consult with the nearest clinic or hospital in your area.

For now, drink plenty of water, take a few paracetamol pills wisely & ensure to maximise your rest in order to avoid menstrual cramp side-effects and to try to alleviate your pain. I urged you not to take any medication & supplements (other than basic NSAIDS) prior to seeking a doctor at certified clinics or hospitals To prevent any possible adverse event following the uptake of unprescribed drugs.
