Having irregular periods from last 2 years. Having medicine for that but periods are only regular until i take my medicine only.

  • Hi there! Thank you for the question. Reading from your question I could understand that you are experiencing menstrual irregularities. It is apparent that you are worried about your condition. First of all let me begin by defining menstrual irregularities. A menstrual cycle which ranges from 21 to 35 days is considered a normal cycle.

  • So if you are experiencing a longer or a shorter cycle then you are having an abnormal menstrual cycle which needs medical attention. Before we can discuss your problem, it is important for me to know few crucial information about your condition. What is the medication you have been taking?

  • Have you been having regular menstrual cycle before the two years you have mentioned? Do you have any other medical conditions or medications you are currently on? So generally woman with irregular menstrual cycle will be prescribed with oral contraceptive pills which will regularize their menstrual cycle.

  • But the downfall of these medications are that they will only regularize your menstrual cycle as long as you consume it. So it is important to know the exact cause of your menstrual irregularities. It can be hormonal or structural abrnormalities of your uterus. There are few tests you can do to confirm the reason for your menstrual irregularities such as pelvic examination, pap smear (rule out vaginal cancer), blood test (can determine if there is any hormonal imbalance) and ultrasound (to identify if there are any structural abnormalities within your uterus).

  • Once the reason for your menstrual irregularities is established then it would be easy to treat the root cause. This will allow a regular menstrual cycle. Hence it is advisable to consult a Ob-gyne for your condition. This will prevent any future consequences. All the best!
