High blood pressure issue

Hello miss/mdm/mr.
I’m a 55 years old woman with high blood pressure history and currently consume the same blood pressure pill for about 5 years already but i didnt have my regular blood pressure checked. Few days ago, i got some bad news which made my unable to rest properly and always in worries. At that time, my blood pressure is systolic 165 mmHg diastolic 97 mmHg pulse 108/min using the blood pressure machine i bought. After taking the medicine prescribed by one of the doctor at here, i took a nap and when i measure it in the evening, the result is systolic 144 mmHg diastolic 89mmHg and pulse 121/min. After that,(enough sleep) the next day morning SYS 118 mmHg, DIA 88mmHg and Pulse 104/min and in the evening SYS 113 mmHg, DIA 72 mmHg and pulse 104/min. Then, i measured my bp again. It shown that the bp is SYS 115 mmHg, DIA 77mmHg and pulse 83/min. Therefore, i would like to ask how is the condition of my bp? should i seek for the doctor to change the medicine dosage?
Thank you.

Hi, thank you for your question. A normal blood pressure for all adults above the age of 18 is less than 120/80 mmHg. A blood pressure between 120/80 and 140/90 is considered in the higher end of normal blood pressure.

Hypertensive patients below the age of 80 should aim to have blood pressure less than 140/90 mmHg. If they are 80 years old or older, they should aim to achieve a blood pressure less than 150/90 mmHg.

However, if they have other medical conditions, blood pressure target for this group of people will be stricter. Aim to achieve blood pressure less than 130/80 mmHg, if they are younger than 65 years old or if they have diabetes, kidney impairment, heart disease, stroke, transient ischaemic attack (ministroke) or proteinuria (presence of protein in urine) 300 mg/day.

For your information, high blood pressure can still goes up even when you took the medicine and losing weight due to several factors such as:

  • Stress or anxiety or tiredness - all these can cause high blood pressure. Thus the importance of mindfulness as well
  • Hormonal problems such as hyperthyroid or phaeochromocytoma (high adrenaline secreted by the body)
  • Undiagnosed kidney problem
  • Consumption of alcohol or caffeine or smoking
  • Not enough dose of medication - the medication either not suitable for you as certain people developed tolerance to the medication or you need a slightly higher dose of the medications

Nevertheless, I still encourage you to go to your nearest clinic to get a thorough checkup on your health to see if there is a health condition that would cause your blood pressure to increase suddenly.
