I actually missed my period for 90 days

I actually missed my period for 90 days but on the mid of March last month I got my period back. But now my period haven’t stopped and I’m continuosly bleeding every single day. The flow is not too heavy but its heavy enough that if I don’t change my pads every 8 hours i might leak. Should I actually be worried about this?

Hello there, miss. Thank you for your question and I understand you must be worried having to bleed every day. From your description, I understand that you are having irregular period that is prolonged and heavy and is definitely not spotting. Heavy menstrual bleeding or menorrhagia is defined as bleeding of more than 80 ml during period or period going on more than seven days.

A normal menstrual may range from 25 days to 45 days and depends on individuals. If this interferes with your daily life and activities, I strongly suggest that you consult a doctor as you may have anaemia from the loss of blood due to prolonged bleeding. Other symptoms of anaemia are dizziness, shortness of breath, fatigue and looking pale.

Prolonged bleeding may happen due to intake of medications such as anti-coagulant or as a side effect of intra-uterine devices. Hormonal imbalance may also cause prolonged bleeding due excess oestrogen and progesterone that regulated the lining of the uterus. Lack of progesterone giving rise to anovulation is possible too. If you are close to menopause, this could be a reason too.

Underlying medical conditions such as benign growth such as uterine fibroid or uterine cancer may lead to prolonged bleeding. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) may also cause irregular periods due to long term infection. Ectopic pregnancy, a pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus may cause bleed. In a normal pregnancy, menstruation stops and sometimes there is spotting during the first trimester.

A sudden bleed during pregnancy warrants a visit to the doctor. All in all, the cause of your problem should be identified. Your doctor may run several tests to monitor your red blood cells and hormone levels and may also perform procedures such as pap smear.
