Hi there! Thank you for your question. As you have mentioned, you have dysmenorrhea (period pain) every month. Before I can answer your question, I would like to know how old are you. As to answer your question, it is quite normal to experience dysmenorrhea. You can reduce the pain by taking mefenamic acid and placing hot pack on your abdomen.

Well there two types of dysmenorrhea, primary and secondary dysmenorrhea. Primary dysmenorrhea is menstrual pain that’s not a symptom of an underlying gynecologic disorder but is related to the normal process of menstruation and it is the most common type of dysmenorrhea. It is usually common in late adolescence and the early 20s.

Fortunately for many women, the problem eases as they mature, especially after a pregnancy. Meanwhile secondary dysmenorrhea is menstrual pain that is generally related to some kind of gynecologic disorder that can be easily treated with medications or surgery and it usually affects women during adulthood. Primary dysmenorrhea is caused by excessive levels of prostaglandins, a hormones that make your uterus contract during menstruation and childbirth and it is also responsible for the pain.

The pain results from the release of these hormones when the lining (endometrium) is sloughing off during your menstrual period leading to uterus contraction and decreased blood flow to the uterus. Secondary dysmenorrhea caused by a number of conditions, such as:

  • fibroids (benign tumours that develop within the uterine wall )
  • adenomyosis (tissue that lines the uterus, called the endometrium begins to grow within its muscular walls)
  • sexually transmitted infection (STI)
  • endometriosis (fragments of the endometrial lining that are found on other pelvic organs)
  • pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • an ovarian cyst or tumour
  • the use of an intrauterine device (IUD), a birth control method

If your symptoms continues, it is advisable to consult a Obstetrician for your condition. This will prevent any future consequences.
