Hey and thanks for your question. Tonsillitis defined as an inflammation of the tonsils tissue whihc is the glands at the back of our throat, visible by seeing through the mouth. The inflammation process may involve other areas at the back of the throat, such as the adenoids and the lingual tonsils which is the tonsil tissue located at the back of the tongue. There are several variations of tonsillitis such as acute, recurrent, or chronic tonsillitis, and the severe condition called as peri tonsillar abscess.
Viral or bacterial illnesses and immunological factors may lead to tonsillitis and causing its complications. Almost all children in the United States had at least 1 episode of tonsillitis. But due to improvements in medical and surgical facilities, complications associated with tonsillitis and including mortality reported in patients with tonsillitis are rare nowadays.
The herpes simplex virus (HPV), Streptococcus pyogenes, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), adenovirus, and the measles virus accounted the most cases of acute pharyngitis or acute tonsillitis. Bacteria accounted 15 % to 30 % percent of all pharyngotonsillitis cases with Streptococcus pyogenes is the most common cause for bacterial tonsillitis.
Tonsillitis usually has to be treated by its course. To help ease the symptoms you have to get plenty of rest, drink cool water to soothe your throat, by taking paracetamol or ibuprofen tablets (do not give aspirin to children under 16)
and try to gargle with warm and salty water. Tonsillitis is often treated with a course of antibiotics.Fluid therapy and pain control medications are important. Admission to hospital may be required only in severe cases, especially when there is airway obstruction. When the tonsillitis is chronic or recurrent, a surgical operation is done to remove the tonsils gland is often recommended. Peritonsillar abscess or quinsy may need an urgent treatment to remove the abscess.
