2 years old child having Fever 38.5

Hi doctor, my 2 years old son having fever 38.5 from yesterday to now and he have close contact with “suspected” covid 19 teacher. Because his both teachers are staying in a same apartment with 1 confirmed covid 19 positive patient (but no sure is it the same block). Now his teachers are self quarantine today. May I ask is my son in a potential high risk to get covid 19? Do I need to bring him to perform covid 19 test?

Greetings!

Thank you for your question. I understand that you are worried about your son contracting the COVID-19.

For your information, the most common symptoms of COVID-19 in children are fever and cough, but children may have any of these signs or symptoms of COVID-19:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Nasal congestion or runny nose
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Stomachache
  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Poor appetite or poor feeding, especially in babies under 1 year old

Monitor your son for COVID-19 symptoms every day

Pay particular attention to:

  • Fever (temperature 37.5’C or higher)
  • Sore throat
  • New uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing (for a child with chronic allergic/asthmatic cough, see if there is a change from their usual cough)
  • Diarrhea, vomiting, or stomachache
  • New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever

I would encourage you, on behalf of your son to answer this quiz on Risk Assessment for COVID-19 to evaluate your son’s health status in regards to this disease. After completing this quiz, your son will be classified into several categories. Further instructions will be given at the end of the quiz. Please act accordingly.

Since your son had direct contact with a suspected case, you may also take him directly to visit the hospitals in this list for a COVID-19 screening test. (Designated Hospital for COVID-19). Other than that, do practice good hand hygiene and wear face mask or face shield in public.

You may consult a MOH doctor by clicking Ask Doctor at the Ministry of Health website (COVID-19 Portal) to ask any health issues related to COVID-19 starting from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm.

After 5.00 pm till 12.00 am, please direct your enquiries to our DoctorOnCall website at this link https://www.doctoroncall.com.my/tanya/.
