I have irregular period and currently due 2 months

Hi. Good day.
I have irregular period and currently due 2 months. I’m married and had done UPT recently and it is negative. I have symptoms like tender breast, mood swing, pimples and acne on face and aching at my vaginal area and don’t want to make sex feeling. What should I do to force the period goes out?

  • Hi, thank you for the question. Since urine pregnancy test is negative, you are not pregnant currently. These symptoms are more likely due to pre-menstrual syndrome. It is a common condition among women that happened before menses, typically starts around 5-11 days before menstruation. These symptoms will resolve once the menstruation started.

  • Your symptoms are related to the increase of estrogen and progesterone hormones in your body. In most cases, the symptoms are mild and moderate. In some rare severe cases, it can cause mental disorder. Symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome includes abdominal bloating, breast tenderness, mood swing, acne, diarrhoea, constipation, irritable and sensitive to light and sound.

  • Some medical conditions can have similar symptoms as pre-menstrual syndrome, such as anemia, thyroid diseases, endometriosis, connective tissue disease, irritable bowel syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome. Your doctor will ask about your family history of pre-menstrual syndrome, symptom free days in between, interference with daily activities, recent mood changes and previous treatment.

  • A doctor can only diagnose pre-menstrual syndrome when the medical conditions are rule out with recurrent pattern of symptoms before menstruation. Sometimes, doctor need to order blood test on you.

  • Currently, pre-menstrual syndrome can be treated symptomatically using NSAIDS or antidepressant medication. Since the fluctation of hormone is the root cause of pre-menstrual syndrome, oral contraceptive pills may be given by your doctor to stop the period.

  • However, there are risks and side effects that need to be discussed before starting these treatment. Based on your description, the symptoms are troubling your daily routine. Please discuss with your doctor and have a good day !!!
