I started taking yaz pills on my first day of period

I started taking yaz pills on my first day of period (on the first day of my heavy blood flow). It has been 11 days and my period hasnt stopped. I have never had a prolonged period before as it usually lasted 7-8 days before this. This is also my first time taking coc. Could this prolonged period be a side effect of Yaz?

Hey and good morning. Cheers for letting me know the question. Im glad that you are asking about the contraceptive methods that are available in our country. A brief description about yaz is a good one to start with. The yaz is a combination of 2 hormones which is oestrogen also known as ethinyl estradiol and a progestin which is drospirenone.

This product is used to avoid pregnancy. It acts mainly by preventing the ovulation or the production of an egg during your menstrual cycle. It also can makes the vaginal fluid to become thicker to help stopping sperm from reaching an egg during the fertilization process. Yaz also can alters the lining of the womb or uterus to prevent attachment of an egg that has been fertilized.

If a fertilized egg does not go to the uterus, it will be passed out from the body. This pill also may be used to relieve moderate acnes and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) if you have chosen to use oral contraceptive pills as your option of pregnancy prevention. Besides avoiding pregnancy, oral contraceptive pills can make your menstrual period more regular, reduce blood loss and painful cramps, and reduce your risk of developing an ovarian cysts.

Yes, one of the side effects of yaz is irregularities in period. Other than that, the side effects are headache, vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps, breast tenderness, nipple discharge and nausea. It is advisable for you to go and meet your local GP to discuss further with regards to your situation.
