Hi there. Thank you for the question. It is apparent that you are worried about your condition. There are mainly sexually transmitted infections and non sexually transmitted infections that are responsible for vaginal discharge as well as itchy vagina. Lets begin with sexually transmitted infections such such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. People with multiple partners are prone to these infections.
Chlamydia is caused by bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis. Symptoms of chlamydia includes abnormal vaginal discharge that may have an odor, bleeding between periods, painful periods, abdominal pain with fever, pain when having sex, itching or burning in or around the vagina and pain when urinating.
Chlamydial infection can cause pelvic inflammatory diseases in woman which can cause permanent damage to reproductive system. Chlamydial infection can lead to long-term pelvic pain, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy. Chlamydia can be treated by a course of antibiotics such as azithromycin or doxycycline. Azithromycin will be prescribed once a day for five days meanwhile doxycycline will be prescribed twice daily for a week.
It can also be gonorrheal infection which is caused by bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Symptoms of gonorrhea includes burning or painful sensation during urination, greater frequency or urgency of urination and a pus-like discharge from the vagina. Gonorrrhea can be treated with certain antibiotics such as azithromycin or ceftriaxone.
Besides sexually transmitted infections, it can also be bacterial vaginosis. It is characterized as vaginal inflammation caused by the overgrowth of bacteria naturally found in the vagina, which upsets the natural balance.
Symptoms of bacterial vaginosis includes thin, gray, white or green vaginal discharge, foul-smelling (fishy) vaginal odor, vaginal itching and burning sensation during urination. Metronidazole or clindamycin is usually prescribed for bacterial vaginosis. Hence it is advisable to consult a Ob-gyne for your condition. This will prevent any future consequences. All the best!
