  • Hey there and I appreciate your kind question. From your description above, it is advisable as the first step you better go and have a discussion with your GP with regards to any emergency contraception that is suitable for your situation. It is known that almost all of the emergency contraceptions are safe to be used in pregnancy.

  • Basically an emergency contraception can prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse or if the contraception method you have used has failed. Let say for example, a condom has damage or you have missed a dose of contraceptive pill. There are 2 types of emergency contraception which are the emergency contraceptive pill for example Levonelle or ellaOne (the "morning after" pill) or the intrauterine device (IUD) or known as copper coil.

  • Levonelle is a medication that contains levonorgestrel which is a synthetic analogue of the natural hormone named progesterone produced by the ovaries. It acts to stop or delay the release of an ovum through ovulation.
Levonelle has to be eaten within 3 days or 72 hours of sexual activity to prevent pregnancy. It does not interfere with your previous method of contraception.

  • ellaOne contains substance called ulipristal acetate, which acts to stop progesterone working process. It also acts by stopping or delaying the production of an ovum or egg. This medication has to be eaten within 5 days or 120 hours of sex to avoid pregnancy. They should not be intended to be used as your normal form of contraception.

  • But you can use emergency contraception more than 1 in your menstrual cycle if you have to. Both of them does not continue to prevent pregnancy after you are having unprotected sexual activity after eating the pill.
